Pbase & exif data while shooting in RAW - 02-17-2005, 07:56 PM

At around October or November last year, I started to shoot most, if not all, of my shots in RAW format. I've noticed that since then, none of the pictures that I post in my pbase account come with any exif data.

I have set pbase to automatically strip and display the exif data for all my shots. I have found those that I originally shot in jpeg have them, and those that I shot in raw, and converted to jpeg don't.

I use PS-CS's raw viewer and editor to process my raw shots. Via CS, I can see the exif data transfer from raw to tif to jpeg, but I'm not sure why pbase doesn't see the same thing.

Do any of you know how to remedy this? I would really like to have my exif data in pbase shown, not only for me, but for anyone else who may be looking at the shots. I think displaying the exif data really helps me and others understand what the conditions were when the shutter was pressed.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
-christian.

The fact that they were originally shot as RAW shouldn't matter to PBase, as long as the EXIF data is preserved when you save the JPG's. Are you using "Save for the Web" in Photoshop CS? If so, that's your problem as it strips EXIF info. Personally I found that plug-in to be very slow and of very little value anyway, it's much easier to record and action to do the steps you want for web-saving anyway, since you can then batch a whole bunch of images.

Hi Jeff,

No, I don't use "save for the web" -- I either have a series of actions to convert and resize or I use "Dr. Brown's Image Processor". Normally, I batch all my conversions. At first, I was thinking that "Dr. Brown's" script was stripping the exif data; that's what prompted me to create actions as an alternative way to the same end. No dice :(

I think I've even tried to take one picture, and start with RAW and manually go all the way to the web resized jpeg. Still no dice. I will try repeating this process because I did it so long ago that I do not remember what the conditions were.

Could it be the CS RAW converter?

I observed this also and asked. I was told that it was a "bug" in Adobe's Raw Converter and moving up to the new one available on their site fixed it. I haven't verified that yet since my test account on PBase expired and I signed up with smugmug - and I haven't uploaded any since the upgrade.

If you look at the resulting JPG in other applications do you see the EXIF?

I don't know what could be causing this unless it's something that only shows up for Canon RAW files processed with PS-CS. I use PS-CS for all my RAW processing with the D70 and have no problem with EXIF info showing up on PBase.

Hi Jeff,

It's been a long time since I've looked at photos in any other application other than PS... but I think I remember looking at it with Microsoft's Digital Image Suite, and I could not see the exif info there either...

Even when I mouse over the picture's thumbnails in the windows directory, I only see the filesize... in my original jpeg pictures, I also see the name of the camera and the date I took the picture.

Thanks, I appreciate all your help...
-christian.
