Need Help to AEB on the 1Ds MarkII - 04-18-2009, 01:30 PM

Does anyone know how to set the AEB on the 1Ds MarkII to expose 5 images? According to reports it can do 3 and 5 frames AEB. 3 is no problem, but can't find the settings for the 5 frames.
Thanks

I do not believe you can bracket 5 shots automatically. From what I remember of my Mark II, it will only do three shots.

I checked; from the Canon website:

Issue: How do I set Auto Exposure Bracketing?
Solution: How to set Auto Exposure Bracketing on the EOS 1D Mark II, EOS 1D Mark II N, and EOS 1Ds Mark II.

The camera brackets the exposure automatically up to +/- 3 stops in 1/3- stop increments for three successive shots. This is called Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB). AEB is possible by automatically changing the shutter speed or aperture or by changing the ISO speed and keeping the shutter speed and aperture fixed.

Thanks Dick, I read the manual, but another webpage indicated that 5 AEB could be achieved with the 1Ds MarkII.

If there's a way I'd like to try it.

Here's another site talking about setting the 5 exposure settings.

I don't have a MK II, I have a 1Ds Mark III, not sure how similar they are, but the manual says on page 100 that it can bracket three shots, it doesn't mention any more on that page, but if I go into Custom functions I-6, it gives me the option to add 5 or 7

Tarick, They are similar but the Mark III has a bit more bells & whistles I'm sure.
I've been through all the customs functions
F. CN 06 sets the aperture bracketing from 1/3 to 1/2 stop, but that's all.
and I did not find anything in the Personal functions.

Found this on the Canon Digital Learning Center:

Bracketing with EOS Mark III and Mark II series cameras:
EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1Ds Mark III:

Use Custom Function I-6 (Number of bracketed shots). Default is 3-shot bracketed sequence; choices are 2, 5, or 7 bracketed shots. If two shots are chosen, you determine whether it's normal exposure plus over-exposure, or normal plus an under-exposed frame via C.Fn I-5-1 or I-5-2.

Original EOS-1D, EOS-1Ds, and all Mark II series:

Install Personal Function 8 into camera (connect FireWire cable from camera to computer, activate EOS Utility or EOS Viewer Utility software, go to Camera Settings > Personal Functions, and upload P.Fn 8 into camera after selecting 2, 5, or 7 bracketed shots as an option). Then, once installed, P.Fn 08 can be turned on or off in camera's menu. If user selects 2-shot bracket using P.Fn 08, Custom Function 09-0 or 09-1 provides a normal and under-exposed frame; C.Fn 09-2 or 09-3 generates a normal and over-exposed bracketed 2-frame sequence.

Hope it helps,

Thanks so much Dick,
Been trying to perform this function and it won't work for me. Can't get to load the "P.Fn 8. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.
The good thing is that once the software for the Personal function is loaded it can be turned on/off "in camera" for default or adjusted under Personal function settings for 2, 5 and 7 AEB settings.
I was going to start doing the settings manually but that would mean I'd chance moving the camera. Maybe I'll take it to a camera store that has the experience in setting this up.

I have never used any of the Canon software so I can't help much with making it work. You might try not using an updated version of the software, but rather using the one off the disk that came with your 1Ds Mark II. Since the Mark III does not have the personal functions, Canon may have dropped that function in their current software.

Sorry I couldn't help more,

Angelo, without your being more specific, all I can tell you is you need to use the canon utility that came with the 1DsmkII and you need to connect to your computer using the firewire cable that came with the camera. (or similar 6 to 4 pin firewire cable). Only then will you be able to access the personal function menus and change your settings.
This is what you should see in progression if you are using the correct software and selecting the correct options.

Thanks Dick/Ken, I'll go at it again and and make it work.
I'll write down what I do and what I encounter.

I called Canon and they have new software to perform this function change (Version 16). I didn't ask but it seems that V.9 is for PCs and does not work on the MAC.
Anyway, I purchased the software and should have it in 7 days or so.

For those that have been asking, I have yet to receive the upgrade software from Canon. I called once and could not reach anyone to talk about this. I've also been traveling a lot so I haven't pursued it further. Let me call them again.

Canon sent me a book and the 'EOS Digital Solution Disk/1Ds Mark II version 9.0'

We loaded the software on and now I'm able to bracket 5 or 7 exposures. But I must pick 5 or 7 and not both.

This is what I found:
1. If I want to change from 7 to 5, I must go back into the software and make the change from 7 to 5. (I thought we could install 5 and 7 AEB and change between them in the camera)

2. Using the 3 shot default bracketing I'd put the camera in multiple exposure and do the AEB. Once the three sequential firings went off, the camera would stop firing. But, with the 7 AEB setting, the camera takes 7 shots (- - - 0 + + +) and continues firing way beyond the 7 shots. (After the 7th firing it resets itself to non AEB)

As it stands, I'm able to do my image bracketing and I'm happy about that. The easiest and most logical way to accomplish the 7 shots would be to leave the camera in single firing and just take the 7 shots one at a time. (i.e., not use auto multiple exposures)

I'm going to call Canon and see if maybe I'm doing something wrong and hopefully make the camera work as I describe above.
