You guys know of any sites that do a good job of chronicling different shots and what camera settings were best suited for it.

I'm really just trying to learn how to use manual setting according to what lighting I'm in, I'm completely new to this, I've just been going out and shooting lately and watching how my pictures turn out right after I shoot them to see the difference when I change the settings but I just haven't put it all together yet.

haha you're right, I usually go through here and look at others people pictures and try to get them to tell me how they had their camera set, I was just wondering if there was another site made specifically for that.

Depending on the browser you use, there are plug-ins that will enable you to inspect the EXiF (camera settings) data on images. As an example, I use Firefox and a plug-in called FxIF. It allows me to right click and select properties on images. A dialog box comes up and I can see most of the camera settings if the photographer didn't strip the data. For instance, this shot of mine:

Camera Make: NIKON CORPORATION

Camera Model: NIKON D3

Image Date: 2009:04:14 19:18:12

Flash Used: No

Focal Length: 190.0mm (35mm equivalent: 190mm)

Exposure Time: 0.0063 s (1/160)

Aperture: f/7.1

ISO equiv: 200

White Balance: Manual

Metering Mode: Center Weight

Exposure: Manual

Exposure Mode: Manual

Give it a try!

I know that Brad Barton gives some beginner classes.

I'll be giving some in the fall in Arlington.

Buy Bryan Peterson's book Understanding Exposure. You can order it from the TPF bookstore.

This forum is a wealth of information, but I also always recommend to beginners to pick up a copy of Bryan Peterson's book, Understanding Exposure. It's a great reference guide to understanding how to get off the little green box and use your camera settings to their fullest.
