Two Frames- One Idea - 11-09-2009, 11:38 AM

Hi everyone,
I covered the Veteran's Day Parade for the local newspaper. I had two shots of the same subject, from different angles. I sent them both in, but indicated which one I thought was the #1. Upon reflection, I'm not sure I chose wisely.

Below are the two shots I sent in. I chose the first one because of the context: it shows the woman watching the parade, and the parade is included in the frame. The second one is just the old lady with the flag, and it could be anywhere, any time. So, if you were a photo editor, which would you have chosen?

i'd pick the first shot as well. the second one would be nice because you can see her face, but you miss the parade. what i think would have worked well would be the second shot with the parade in the reflection (glasses, car window, or side of the car). if only it was a black car.

1 shows a parade, 2 does not. The parade was the story. This shows it and the support for it. 1 is a go.

The first shot definitely tells the story best. At the same time, I LOVE the second shot! Nice to see some good pj stuff here!

+1 for 1. The fact that it doesn't show the face leaves it to your imagination what she is thinking (remembering a lost soldier, pride, etc.) It's a story with a mystery.

+1 for 1. It tells the story. Older lady watching a parade... given the date and other information through headline or cutline, you know what is going on. You can tell that she is an older lady and by her age one can deduce that she has seen a lot in her lifetime. She is engaged in watching the parade. The fact that she doesn't have a lot of face in the image is alright because it is not necessarily about her... it is about the action that is happening and what is being remembered.

The second image is really nice as well but is not as strong for a parade image. However good secondary photo.

#1 all the way. It tells a story so much better than #2.

The context in the first one does make it "better." the second would be one heckuva shot to illustrate a feature on the old lady. I bet she has stories to tell.
