Atlas-F Missile Silo turned into home - 11-23-2009, 12:08 PM

A few months ago, I came across an article in WIRED magazine that had an Abilene, Texas byline. It was about Bruce Townsley, who had bought a decommissioned Atlas-F missile silo near Oplin, TX and converted it into a comfortable living space. A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to head out to his silo to take some pictures and do a write-up for the local paper. You can see more of the pics, and links to the story on my photoblog.

No, no...Bruce is absolutely not one of those survivalist types. He was watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1989, and the guest was Ed Peden, the first guy to buy a silo (in Kansas, I believe). Bruce was just completely taken with the idea, and 8 years later, made it happen.

When I was in college I was one of those kids that broke into one of those around Abilene. It was dark and I was scared ****less. It looks much cooler now.
