first off, i'm no photojournalist. second i don't have fast long glass so i had to make due with my kit 70-300. i haven't used it in ages, but it seems sharper than i remember. and last yeah, i blew the exposures on some. i kept forgetting to adjust my shutter when i was trying to shoot dark areas vs light.

if memory serves, it was a 4 alarm fire, with the first call going in around 5:39am this morning. i'll sorely miss hurricanes, along with the others.

here's a couple from the whole set

Shots look pretty good for the kit lens.

I like the second and last shot here.

Your forth one seems a bit over exposed.

Good shots of a sad scene, James. Was quite a massive fire.

You don't need to apologize for using a kit lens ... they can do fine work with plenty of light.

Nice series, I especially like the second and fourth ones.

I'm curious about why you chose to shoot in manual mode? It seems like this would have been a good situation for Aperture priority.

thanks.

basically i didn't want to fight the camera on what to expose for, so i would change (well, most of the time. forgot sometimes!) shutter and aperture manually. with that long (70-300mm)slow kit lens, i didn't really want to fall below 1/200 for shutter to combat camera shake, and i really didn't want to shoot exactly wide open so the pictures wouldn't be as sharp as i could get them.

Some us always shoot in manual mode! When I started working at my first newspaper after college, I was using an Olympus OM-1 ... manual was it. Old habits die hard.

Just went by there today and there is a chainlink fence up with a sign for JR's Demolition, they did the Arcadia demolition, and low and behold MY PHOTO of that job is incorporated into their sign! The sign faces goodwin and not greenville. I need to get my camera and go back and shoot the banner to show that they are using my photo without permission! I looked on their website and at least they don't have more of my shots from that fire on their site.

BTW in my pbase album the wife of one of the principles asked to buy some photos but when I got back to her she never replied back to me.

Sad to see that it looks like they will just scrape the lot clean and not try to save any of the facade.

Went back by today and realized the shot that they used was

My card reader that I grabbed is acting up so will need to go back by the house and get another one but I will load up the pic of their banner with this photo on it. Not sure what I am going to do yet, no one was at the site so I shot a few shots of the site today. They have an architects banner up and some others that said that they will rebuild but it looks very much like the 80+ year old Facade will be history though it is all still standing. Funny thing even a plastic owl that was up there to scare off pigeons is still standing doing somewhat of a job since the pigeons are all setting at the other end of the building.

James, I like those shots. I was driving to work that morning, I usally turn off of greenville at lovers lane but followed #37 engine down greenville, I had to turn off at mockingbird (as I didn't have my camera with me at the time ) to go to work. But it was an impressive fire as the flames were visible above the tree line at greenville and mockingbird (over a mile away) If I had my camera I'm sure I probably been very late too work
