What comes into your mind’s eye when you hear the words “Viet Nam?” Be honest – was the image you saw little old ladies in conical hats? Was it poverty? Was it war? Was it peasants toiling in verdant rice fields?

None of those images is incorrect – but they don’t tell the whole story. Viet Nam is no longer considered a poor country. A few ago, the United Nations recategorized Viet Nam from a poor country to a developing country. Sure – there are lots of poor people in Viet Nam and some of them wear conical hats and work in rice fields.

Yea, but isn't it great Doug? I think that's what I love about it the most... it has one foot in the exotic days of yesteryear, while stepping into the 21st century with the other. Looks like you had a recent trip back?

I always say.. I'm traveling 20-30 years to late. Most of the real exotic places are now mini-malls. The same will happen to Viet Nam (and Cambodia) but I love watching the transition.

Nice Series!

Great series again, Doug. That shot of the hotel Caravelle brought back a lot of memories. There used to be a french bakery, Brodard, down the street. I used to buy Matchbox cars from a toy store in front and to the right of the old opera house which used to be the House of Representatives of the Republic of Viet-Nam. I still have not been back there. I am thinking of taking the family there in 2 years when my son graduates from high school. Thank you for sharing. Tri.
