Officer Hank Nava of the Fort Worth Police Department was laid to rest December 5, 2005. He died on December 1, 2005 after being shot in the head while serving a warrant two days earlier. He is survived by a wife and two young children. Thousands of mourners, including hundreds of police from all over the Dallas/Fort Worth area, surrounding communities, and other parts of Texas attended the funeral and lined the route of the procession.

The display of respect for Officer Nava was enormous. I have never seen anything like I did today. It was an honor.

I'm going to split this post into two different messages...

Here are some of the shots I took today:

Placing Officer Nava into the car to be transported to the cemetery:

Officers waiting to escort the car to the cemetery:

The gathering. There must have been 1,500 officers present.

The walk back to the cars went under a huge flag hanging between two firetrucks:

I'll have to post a gallery because there were many photos that show the level of respect due to Officer Nava.

While driving to the cemetery I was surprised to see so many people along the side of the freeway with their hands over their hearts, their hats in their hands and to see fire companies on bridges saluting. There were hundreds of them.

But one visual stuck out among all the others... These shots were taken out the front window of my car:

This one marine, all by himself. Standing and saluting as each car went by. This visual will stay with me forever.

Semper Fi. Wonderful photographs, they catch the spirit of the event.

Great stuff, Joe.. the Marine is one of those moments when you wish you could pull your car over and make a proper picture... The pride in his salute is palpable.

You did a great job of showing the emotion of the day. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

Great shots guys. I wish I could have been there. There have been too many funerals in the last 2 months!
