Any Wildfire Photographers here? - 05-03-2008, 05:10 PM

Hello! I'm new to the site here.

I'm looking to see if there are any other wildfire photographers here?

I do wildfire photography, this is some thing I always wanted to do. Last year was my first full year doing it, and I be doing it again this year.

I didn't go to that one. I have yet to go to my first fire this year.

I hadn't considered something like wildfire photography as a dedicated field--way to carve a niche. How do you get access? Don't you need permission from authorities, etc?

If you live in socal like me, it's easy for wildfire photography to become a dedicated field.

Just need to get your self a press pass. Need to take a basic wildland firefighter class before getting up close with fires.

My husband got some cool shots of the wildfires from October of last year. He went along with some Coast Guard firefighters that came down from Petaluma area to help with the San Diego wildfires.

He was also on Camp Pendleton when it was burning. He got some awesome shots of the Marine Corp helos dunking the water buckets into a lake there on Pendleton.

My dad is a retired firefighter (Kern County), so I totally know what you're talking about when you say it can be dedicated. How does one go about getting a press pass? Where did you get the firefighter training?

I was on a hand crew for the USFS and thats where I got my training from. Press Passes are hard to come by, I would go to your local newspaper and ask them. I got mine through a site that I take pictures for at socalmountains.com, also I would search for training classes in socal.

Not as a dedicated wildfire photog, but I have always wondered what it would take to get up close.

My husband is a firefighter in San Diego. He also takes pictures while he's on R&R. I might dig some up. They aren't with anything fancy camera wise. I have asked about wildland fire photography too. My husband says you must have a press pass and he too said they are hard to come by. He has spent time talking with the press photographers on fires. He's been in San Diego now for 6+ years.

2 years ago, we awoke to the lass call of a bullhorn evacuating us from our home. When I shot the photos (which I will find and post sometime), the fire was less than 100' from our 2nd story porch.

I don't know if I could do that, too many bad things go on with fires.
The only fires I think I might be interested in would be BBQs or firepit/bonfires. The others are just not happy but thank you to those that do shoot them.

How do you protect your equipment? And how often do you have to clean your equipment?
