Thumbs up Friday Oct 6, 2006 is a PJ's Night in Downtown Dallas - 10-05-2006, 08:33 PM

First we start off with some expected Protestors outside of Ch 8's Studios to greet the Gubinitorial Candidates as they arrive for the nights televised debate. (5:00 on till after Debate)

Second we probably will have several of the candidates go to the West End Marketplace to Speak to the Crowd. (8:30-?)

Third is TEXAS OU WEEKEND FRIDAY NIGHT MADNESS. Now this used to be a crazy night in Dallas with hundreds of arrests along Commerce Street and police in full riot gear, heck you had people scream from the Adolphus windows at the opponents in the Baker Hotel hanging out of their windows. It has quited down a bit but since Texas was ranked so high nationally last year and this being something like the 102nd year of this it still makes for a good night- (just bring a good flash and plenty of juice for it).

To top it all off we are just about at a FULL MOON!

So come on down to downtown and SHOOT AWAY!

I just went down Commerce Street and I will say that it is very unlikely that there will be much of the march up and down the street since many blocks have closed off sidewalks due to construction. I don't know of the city has chosen an adjoining street to substitute in this year or what any alternatives exist for the moment but you still will have activities in the West End and down in Deep Ellum. (saw several banners in DE welcoming the TX OU fans to various venues). West End Market outdoor stage should have some live acts performing.

Heading out into the void in a bit. Have not gone to a TX-OU West End Celebration in a couple years so not sure what to expect for the night.

So I guess I'll stay out till I run out of card space or energy.

Well stayed in the West End right up to about Midnight, may have caught more drunken roudiness after midnight but was getting tired and also wante to check out Deep Ellum.

Well for the night here is a PJ synopsis.

This is a great opportunity to get candid type PJ shots, crowd in the West End was medium in volumne (large enough to get active groups but not too congested to where you couldn't get out of a crowded area without too much effort).

People were being pretty level headed until around 11 pm then the "libations" started to push people to go just a bit too far. Saw a couple arrests (One guy had on a Mavericks Jersey and you can really tell that he had too much to drink) saw a couple instances where the fuse was light for a fight but then someone would come in and pinch out the fire before it would blow up into a full blown fist swinging fight.

Was chatting with a DART cop and he was laughing to himself and his partner about a couple girls in high heals who were just a bit past tipsy and how they were trying to keep their balance.

Chatted with several officers over the evening and they were all in a pretty good mood and even joking about it being a full moon also tonight.

Well I'll be posting some of the pics in the next couple days.

It is a bit of a hard scene to shoot since you have a lot of neon in the background but an overall light level that was low.

Stopped in Deep Ellum after leaving the West End and it was DEAD, few TX OU Fans and most of the clubs looked like they were really hurting for business. Usually at around midnight that area is peaking in numbers of people in the clubs and walking between clubs but last night was nill.

David also came out and shot with me until almost 10 and it made it nice to chat with a friend as the crowd grew.

So next year keep this opportunity on your calendar since it offers some interesting subject matter to shoot. (just expect to hear some 4 letter words).
