Question regarding PJ essay - 11-27-2006, 10:15 PM

Ok I may have a big break tomorrow, fingers crossed. I have a meeting with a photo editor who wants to take a look at a photo essay I did recently. Would love to share it with you all but something tells me to wait until something is inked.

That brings me to my question. They have taken a look at my work and want me to come in and talk about it. If they go with the story which would be a full page in their Friday paper with about 9-10 photographs what should I be asking for compensation?

The paper is a local multi weekly that is published 2 times a week with what I would guess would be from 1000-5000 subscription rate.

I have been covering HS football all year for them so they no my work but this would be my first true photo essay so I don't want to be to greedy because I would love more work.

Meeting is tomorrow so quick replies will really be appreciated

Have somebody proofread any text in that sucker, quick. "no my work" is "Know my work", "to greedy" is "too greedy". And good luck with the project.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

Based on the info you gave, $800 - $100 would be a fair price but I'll bet they won't go for that. Therefore, I think I'd try for a 1/4 of that. Small newspapers, however, always want stuff for free.

If they do, trade them a full page ad or something.

Thanks,

RG

Dooh!! That is why I take the pictures. But very very good point.

Here is how it went:

Met with both the photo editor and sr editor, they are going to run 11 photos on a full page in the Friday paper. They mentioned I would be compensated but never told me how much. I think I was just so excited they decided to run it i just plain forgot to ask. I also wrote all the captions and did the story line.

I think I am going to ask for $200. Too low?

small town paper should pay $25/photo and larger papers $50. If you wrote text, etc. you should get more.

Good luck, and congratulations on entering the PJ world.
