One point to remember about PJ is the huge percentage of people who don't bother to actually read the articles in magazines and newspapers (and online for that matter).
The photo and caption are all they go by to understand(?) the story, so the more information and emotion that can be packed into them, the better.

To me it's the part of any article that will reach out and grab people, and will likely leave the longest-lasting impression, even among many of the people who read every word.
