Eddie, I saw the end of the news story and missed what this actually is burning.

An 800-ft. wide and 80-ft. tall mulch pile.

That's freaking crazy.

This thing could burn on it's for for a year or more.

It is a giant pile of wood. All the big logs and limbs burned 2 weeks ago. Now the fire is slowly cooking all the wood mulch deep in the core. The smoke plume stretched for 15 miles from the site.

Exactly where is this? You have a bunch of people coming down to SA for the Expo/Convention and I know some of us may want to go by and see this-it has been on the news in Dallas/Ft Worth

It is in the little city of Helotes (in NW San Antonio). It is approximately 20 miles from Downtown San Antonio.

FYI - On the downwind side it will smoke your clothing up for days. On the upwind side it is all private land.

The road in has been blocked, I think now, and they have or are bringing people in to take care of the fire, rather than let it burn out. A friend of mine has been covering this for the local news in SA.

Very nice shots!

Fires like this sometimes create some neat effects as they create their on wind. Sometimes you will see a tornado of fire.

All that I could think of when I saw this on the news the other day was "Springfield tire fire" from the Simpsons.

Isn't there a place in Pennsylvania or east of the Mississippi river somewhere that has been burning for years. Snow doesn't even stick in the winter.
