Losing Talent - 09-10-2008, 09:49 PM

I just wanted to offer some facts about the Star-Telegram Voluntary Separation Program that takes effect On Friday Sept 12.

Staff photographers and Editors who took the VSP are in their last days working at the paper. Last day for all is September 12 this Friday. Those taking the VSP are Staff Photographers: Ralph Lauer, Jeffery Washington , and Tom Pennington. Editors taking the VSP are Gregg Ellman and Milton Adams.

Every one at the Star-Tlelgram was offered the VSP and enough people took the offer through out the paper that there will be no involuntary separations at this time.

Yes the paper is going to miss the talent that has left this year and hopefully they will not suffer any more losses later in the year.

The Newspaper business is hurting and they have not found the answers yet to really help the product.

As for myself, its been 38 years in the business and lots of fun times and exciting work. But the last year has been a lot less fun and seemed a lot more like work. For me it was time to get back to the fun of photography and thats what I plan to do.

A reminder to everyone that if you come across that great news photograph, you can still call the Photo Desk at 817-390-7888 and offer it for publication. They would love to see it.

Thanks Milton for the update. It's good to get it directly from the source.

As always, Milton, you have been more informative than the newspaper itself.

I hope your "new" photography career will be lucrative and that we get to work together soon.

Keep in touch via emails, etc.

Good luck with the moving forward, Milton... talent is talent, no matter where they work. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Milton,

Hopefully you and the other photogs that are leaving will be calling the photo desk on a regular basis and we will still get to see your work.

Oh, Milton, sorry to hear that! I'm sure they will miss you, there, but I'm sure you will have a great future ahead of you! Now, you can do more of your actual photography. Your work is so wonderful! I guess I won't miss seeing you at the paper since they never call me anymore anyway, but it's just as well since it would cost me that amount in gas these days! Take care and stay in touch!

Thanks for the information Milton. I think after 38 years you certainly paid the price to be able to enjoy photography again.
Hope we see you around and that you will share some of your work with us on the forum.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. Now all I have to do is get off may fat duff and get going..

And now the story the the Star-Telegram is going to try to sell the downtown building. It never seems to end. I guess its just a matter of time till the Morning News buys the S-T and makes a parking lot out of the building like they did the Times Herald.

I can't imagine the heartache associated with that sort of news. I feel for what you're going to have to go through in the coming months...

Hope you find something that keeps you shooting Milton! You and that D3 of yours is always welcome up here in Flower Mound.

Joe
