Smellography ~ Jakarta, Indonesia - 11-15-2008, 09:55 PM

Here a a few from Jakarta, Indonesia .... you can almost smell the first few.

Was a pretty good trip, but I didn't get to shoot nearly as much as I wanted... not exactly were you want to bop around alone with a big ol' berserker camera hanging around your neck. They say Bali is much nicer.... We arrived on the day of the "Bali Bombers" execution so tensions were pretty high (or higher than normal).

Anyway, here are a few... Still working on the Vietnam shots, which I found much more enjoyable.

C&C always welcome!!

Wow... Thanks for bringing memories of back home.
The last time I was there was back in 91. I can't stand the long flight hours as I was diagnosed with claustrophobia shortly after that.

That's crazy about the sewer worker. I can't believe that he's smoking a cigarette while doing that. Quite sanitary :)

Gene, I enjoyed looking at these. Nice shots! Very interesting. I like the first one- the texture of the brick roadway is appealing. What a neat trip this must have been. Please feel free to post more.

Thanks All...

Actually Kelly, I seldom use Photoshop... frankly it overwhelms me. I pretty much use Capture NX exclusively to PP (or develop). I try to limit my edits to color, contrast, focus, and brightness. (something I learned from Vincent Versace). although he does use Photoshop for more pixel manipulation... I really don't. Sometimes I will use the Noise Ninja or Topaz noise filter in Photoshop on low light or highly cropped images... but only because they don't have Noise Ninja or Topaz noise filter plug-in for NX (yet!)

The first image (fish market) is kinda my version of HDR... it's a single image that I adjusted the contrast of the highlights, mid tones, and shadows separately.

Here's another experiment in NX

Gene, great images.
BTW changing the background to B/W, did you do that in NX?
I have to check that software out. I purchase the NIK Software package and it does so much, but it does not change backgrounds to B/W.

I think these are outstanding! I'm so impressed. You've really captured the diversity -- from the wedding couple to the cowboy to the sewer worker -- beautifully.

Thanks Again!

The people on TPF are great and it always does my confidence good to get the feedback.. whether pos. or neg. Not being able hooking up with a lot of Photogs over here.. or at least ones I can communicate with easily… it’s good to hear from Home.

Angelo, all I did was convert the image to B&W in NX, then used the (–) negative paintbrush to paint away the B&W conversion on the shirts and skin. Then softened it some with a light blur. Was a 5-10 min quick test. You can do that with Photoshop as well.

Image got real grainy after crop. Hope that helps?

A very nice set of images.

They couldn't pay me enough to crawl through a sewer to unclog it. Really puts some perspective on past jobs I've had. Wow.
