Highway Safety Vests - 12-08-2008, 01:29 PM

Just FYI: A new federal law went into effect November 24, 208 that requires all workers on federal highways to wear high visibility safety apparel, including photojournalists who are there to cover news. More info: http://www.nppa.org/news_and_events/news/2008/11/safety01.html

good idea IMO.

Didn't realize photojournalists were also included in this law.

Our Fire and EMS just replaced their vests with the new ones.

Got a friend that markets a real nice vest. It exceeds all the safety stuff and has this cool "glow-light" that runs off AA batteries. Makes the whole vest glow in low/dark conditions.

If anyone wants, I can find out what he sells them for???

I saw some of these last year in Florida. The cops, ems, and firemen all had them on at an accident scene at night... it looked like a twinkling christmas tree, driving past the scene.

Really cool.... see if you can find info on these and post here!

we wore these type of vests as paintball refs in night time games. You can see the refs from a long way off with those glow sticks. It was like having a chem light in the vest.

Yep local news crews including the reporters are sporting the fine looking and fashionable vest when ever they are shooting on the right of way.

My understanding is that they must be worn day or night when in the right of way. ?

The are cheep, like $10, at Home Depot or Lowes. I have several just so that I can be sure to keep one in the car at all times. As RACES officer, I am sometimes called upon by my juristdiction to direct traffic, etc. Thanks for the post. -G

The vests are, no doubt, a good idea but I have serious problems with this kind of "law" making. It's a waste of my tax dollars to pay someone to come up with this ****, write it into bills and argue over it for anywhere from one to 10 years before making a decision.

If you feel you need one you should wear one. You roll the dice and move your mice. I resent the feds trying to child-proof the world.

It is not a bill passed by congress, but rather a Code of Federal Regulation. I don't know if it is related to Title 23 USC.

I have serious misgivings about laws passed by non-legislative, non-elected bodies.

A lot of the local TV stations are compliant but several fashionista reporters are not wearing them.

Now if they can come up with one that has some nice lense and supply pockets for photographers, that would be a nitch market tool. (could also be used in the woods during hunting season for safety).
