Sanctuary - 02-27-2009, 10:23 PM

I'm a little undecided if this is the right place for these. One things for sure it's the safest

These are test shots from the sanctuary in the Church that I attend. I settled on the 200 f2 / 1DMKIII combination (though these were shot with the 1DsMKIII). zthe wide angle shots are with my 14mm lens. All are handheld. The real meal deal will be shot from a tripod. Even at high ISO the shutter speed was fairly low. I've got the preliminary ok to shoot the service so I'm kind of pumped.

In the near future I hope to have some shots of the Pastor and the band playing rather than empty space.

PS- ya gotta love shooting in what is essentially a tv studio... no White Balance issues

What was the lighting set-up? Did you use a flash or strobes? Is that even necessary in this environment?

This was all Sanctuary lighting. They can change modes and this particular setup was for a single speaker. They can light for the band and for theatrical performances.

I specifically shot this without flash or strobes. I will be shooting a few of the services and I can't disrupt a service when I do so long, fast glass and higher ISO is going to be the rule for the shoot.

All shots were hand held. I'll use a monopod or tripod in the real world.

I think these are right...

#1- ISO 3200; 1/60@f2.8; 14mm
#2- ISO 3200; 1/40@f2.8; 14mm
#3- ISO 1600; 1/40@f2; 200mm
#4- ISO 3200; 1/80@f2.8; 300mm
#5- ISO 1600; 1/40@f2.8; 14mm
#6- ISO 1600; 1/100@f2.8; 300mm
#7- ISO 3200; 1/50@f2.8; 300mm
#8- ISO 1000; 1/100@f2; 200mm

i am going to pick your brain (if you don't mind). what made you switch issues and will you use the same shutter speeds with people moving? What made you shoot at 2.8? I was told that the "sweet spot" is between 5.6 and 8.

I wasn't sure where they would let me shoot from (during services) so I took a variety of glass and two bodies. I left my DMKIII in the truck. I wish I hadn't done that. I thought the 200 was on it. But... I think I have a good feel for what I can accomplish with the gear that I took in.

f2.8 (f2) was selected purely from the standpoint of trying to determine what the maximum shutter speed I was going to be able to use was. So I opened all the way up and adjusted the shutter speed for a slight over exposure (I shoot manual) to minimize the effects of noise. I grudgingly shot at ISO 3200 but it came out pretty well. I use Imagenomic Noiseware Pro and it does a nice job of removing noise and not destroying the image.

I switched between the 200 f2 and 300 2.8 so I could shoot both from the same location and then eliminate having to carry one in once I determined where I was going to be allowed to shoot from and what the image would look like. At this point I think I'll use the 200mm lens on the crop sensor (1DMKIII). The 300 will be a little too tight even from the sound board (way up at the top) and the slight improvement from f2.8 to f2 in shutter speed is worth it imho.

My big concern is having enough shutter speed to stop motion... I think it's going to be a timing thing...

Even at 3200 ISO, these look pretty good for handheld, especially if your recollection of shutter speeds are correct.
This looks very nice.

You're lucky. Our church is about half a stop darker with awful white balance coming from multiple light sources. We're using our Gymnasium as a temporary sanctuary. Our chapel, on the other hand, is about a stop brighter with great lights. I just haven't had a chance to shoot an event in there yet.

I don't trust my recollector anymore. I pulled all of the numbers from the EXIF with Bridge.

Very lucky... now if I can just find the time to shoot a little there.
