Fires over North Texas Affecting Many - 04-13-2009, 06:43 PM

As the fires in North/West Texas erupted last week, the smoke covered hundreds of miles and was quite thick in some areas. Here in Haslet, this was the scene at 6:15 pm on April 9th. As you can see, the sun is still quite high in the sky, but the smoke caused the scene to resemble a sunset. I switched to manual mode and metered off the sun to ensure it wasn't blown out. I've been contacted by our local newspaper and it looks like this photo will be in this weekend's edition - pretty cool!

Good job!

I didn't even know about the fires until this last weekend, when someone mentioned it to me during our camping trip in Arkansas.

Agreed. They didn't get much press down this way. I actually found out about them as a weather alert on my computer due to the smoke causing hazy conditions down this way.

One night a few nights ago, the haze was really thick. As the full moon rose, it was a darkish purple, looking like a light bulb about to go out. It eventually got above most of the haze, but it was freaky for awhile. I was out walking the dog, and the purple color was gone by the time I was near my gear.

Great shot. We had 8 fire calls that day and I was at 5 of them and did not get a single shot.

It is a great shot but I didn't enjoy breathing the smoke that day.
