Tea Party attendees - 04-16-2009, 06:34 PM

After looking at all the photos, there is something that really bothers me...it is almost all white people..??? I don't want to be political. I want to be fair. If you attended, did you notice other races there, hispanic, black, asian, etc.? I always view things like this to see if whatever I am attending is well balanced to the world I live in...I'm not seeing that with just the photos I see. PLEASE don't turn this political...I don't want it to be that way...I just want to know who was there...

When I attended yesterday's Tea Party I wasn't taking a racial poll. There were so many fine folks among the 8,000+ that attended the Houston Tea Party. I don't think the attendees' race matters.

I'd say that I could count the minorities I saw at the Dallas protest using fingers and toes and still have a couple left over. It was an overwhelmingly conservative white event.

You need to do more research before coming to such a conclusion.

I'm not just going off that one conclusion ....and my decision is not done...sorry I made it seem that way, and don't think that just because I see it one way or the other...don't assume anything, please...

At the Austin rallies, I saw mostly caucasion. There were also hispanic heritage, asian, African-American (could have been Haitian for all I know... Dark skinned for sure) However, probably 95% were caucasion. at both rallies.

I was at Austin protest. I am Asian. What would race have to do with it? The issues are the way the government is spending too much tax money the USA does not have. Even as far as our president is concerned, it is a moot point...he is just as white as he is black.

As these threads are in the "photojournalism" section, I prefer to avoid the political discussion, and simply present the facts and the images that support them.

I think interjecting your personal feelings into a journalistic presentation is unprofessional and unethical.

Using this point of view, (which I am not arguing with...) I would say look at my post with the pics here (http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=98068). The images say it all.
I do my best to simply capture the event as it happens without making any attempt to tell a specific story by capturing specific images and not others. This is what I saw, this is what I took pictures of. I may lean towards capturing images that get my attention, but that would be it. I do like images that are visually interesting...

Chuck, my apologies, I wasn't referring to you, but to some of the other posts which had a bit less..."objective" of a tone. You have some great work there by the way, particularly #s 3 (and 7, same pic?) and 8.

And now looking at my own previous post, I could probably lump myself into that group. I should have phrased it along the lines of "At the Dallas protest, which was overwhelmingly white, there were a few minorities in attendance."

I'm kicking myself for not attending that photojournalism class at Brookhaven.

Right or wrong, perhaps part of the reason could be that these TEA parties are really talked up on conservative radio programs and the most fervent supporters tend to be the conservative base of the Republican party which is indeed mostly white. I think that some people, blacks, gays, etc., who may agree with the taxation issue might disagree with other issues this base supports and therefore may not feel comfortable in the midst of these folks.

I have my own political feelings on this (another forum), but I can see and respect both sides of the issue. I hate apathy, so I think it's great to see Americans involved in the system no matter what the issue is. I enjoy seeing all the pics of these grass roots photojournalists no matter what the event.
