Houston: Meetup @ Houston downtown tunnels and lunch - 07-09-2008, 11:26 PM

Monday 7/14 we're looking at wandering the tunnels under downtown to shoot and/or grab some lunch. Some won't have time for both so we'll try to structure it so you can catch whichever part you have time for and want to do. I was thinking maybe shoot first then eat and pick a 2 hour window that works best for the most people to be able to either shoot the first hour or eat the second hour. Hopefully that makes sense. I haven't been in quite a while but thought maybe the Park Shops end of the tunnel for eating since they have a lot of choices. Suggestions are encouraged though, especially if you've been recently or work down there. I have the whole day so it won't matter to me. I'm going to put a poll and see what happens.

I'll be there! Well, you'll have to give me directions and instructions on where to park... But I'm there! :)

Sounds cool- not sure what's going on that day for me though

I usually park in the garage of The Park Shops with an entrance on Austin Street between Lamar and McKinney. With a purchase at one of the merchants in the mall you get 2 hours free parking. The food court counts so if you eat from one of them you'll get 2 free hours. At least that's how it was when I was last there but that's been a few years.

I've been thinking about times more and if it's early the tunnels won't be overflowing with people and the eating places won't be swarmed. That would hopefully let us get the most out of the time available. We'll see how the majority vote and go from there.

The tunnels start filling up around 11:00 on most days and if you eat after 11:30 you can expect lines just about everywhere. Depending on the times you pick I would be interested since I work downtown anyway.

I work in Fulbright (old Chevron) Tower, so anytime works for me. Will we be shooting IN the tunnels? I thought they were all privately owned. I often go to Discovery Green to shoot during lunch, but IMO the kids playing in the fountain are the only decent thing to shoot there.

I was thinking walk through the tunnels and see what might be interesting to shoot. I don't really know. I was just trying to think of somewhere tolerable in Houston in July and also close to food so the tunnels came to mind.

Tomorrow we'll meet in the Park Shops at the west end first floor. There used to be an American Express travel shop, Brooks Brothers and jewelry store down there. That's on the street level and there's an escalator down to the tunnels there.

There's a parking garage under the shops with an entrance on Austin Street between Lamar and McKinney. Take your ticket in with you because they at least used to give 2 hours free parking with any purchase in the shops. I figured I'd eat at one of the places in the food court and get parking validation.

I think on the West end 1st floor is Jos. A Banks & Monsoon Restaurant. That is on the San Jancinto entrance. Is that the meet location?

Yes, San Jacinto at Lamar entrance. The escalator down is in that corner. Oh, and meet at 10 to hit the tunnels. I'll have on a black Nikon ball cap.

I'm wearing a blue & white checkered shirt (looks like a takle cloth). I usually have a Monday morning meeting that doesn't end until 10, but I'll try to be there. And I'll be carrying a black camera bag. My hair is pretty much WHITE (grey) and I wear glasses.

In case anyone needs to get hold of the group during the meetup my cells are 832-877-2420 tmobile and 832-264-9813 sprint. If you have tmobile call that number and if you have some other carrier call the sprint number.
