Houston: Film Crawl Group Shoot - 12-23-2008, 09:31 AM

Film Crawl - Houston Metro Rail corridor

Jan 24 (Jan 31st alt)
Market Square/Hermann Park/Dancing Fountains (Main @ Holcombe)

Remember shooting pictures at a relaxed pace?
Do you have a film camera you miss using because the rest of the world started moving too fast?
Well this is the meetup for you!

This outing will be a slow paced shoot of areas near the Houston Metro Rail for film photographers.

The following is a ROUGH itinerary.

10:00am - Noon Meet up / Shoot in Market Square area
Noon - 1:00pm Lunch (Market Square area)
Transit via Metro Rail
1:30pm - 3:30pm Shoot around Hermann Park reflecting pool & Japanese Gardens
Transit via Metro Rail
4:00pm - Daylight lasts Shoot at "dancing fountains' corner of Main & Holcombe.
Suggested dinner & print review @ Star Pizza
http://www.starpizza.net/home1.htm

*-> Add 'ish' to the end of all above times. <-*

Locations along Metro Rail Corridor subject to change as better ideas surface.

Additionally: I have sent an email to Rice University asking permission to shoot on their campus.

This outing will take place on the alternate date due to precipitation or excessive cold.
(Remember: It's hard to get a sharp image when you are shivering!)
When RSVPing include what you consider as the minimum, forecast daily high at which you will participate.
The outing will be bumped to alternate date if the forecast high excludes more than 25% of participants.

I did a little pre-scouting and here is what I found out.

Minor bad news; Gone are the days of the $2 all day metro rail pass. Each ride on the metro rail will now cost $1.25. Each ticket has to be purchased at a kiosk at the rail station before bording. I can envision problems with half a dozen of us trying to feed dollar bills into the rail ticket kiosks while managing gear etc as the train is coming. Metro offers a prepaid, RFID enabled card at many grocery stores. Here is a PDF listing that you can search for places in your zip to buy said card. I would guess that four or five trips would cover the day. ($5 or $6.25)

Market Square
Plenty of old archetucture to photograph.
Plenty places to eat. Les Girivals (vietnamese) (across Congress Ave. from Mkt Square) looked pretty good.

Market Square parking
Kim-Son parking garage
-Found the restraunt closed (bummer) but the gerage is open.
Weekend entrance on Milam between Congress and Preston.
$5 all day. Attendant was there when I parked and left.
Right on Market Square.

Hermann Park
Plenty to shoot as always.
We might want to start in Hermann park to beat the crowd. I arrived about 1:30 and had minor difficulty waiting for people to clear a scene.

Hermann Park Parking
Park in park for free if you are early or lucky.
-or-
Park Plaza medical center - parking garage
5700 n caroline
North of Science meuseum & right next to metro rail station.
$10/day

Rice Univ.
Still have not had any responce frim Rice about photography on campus. Stopped by any way. Got some nice shots w monopod and 35mm. Passing security did not even take note of my activty. As a matter of fact did not notice that I was trying to flag him down as he was riding off on his bike. I will stop by Rice business offices this week to enquire.

DANCING FOUNTAINS
lots of lighting in fountain - could be good for dusk evening shoot.
Actually called "Gus S & Linda F Wrotham park"
corner of main & Holcomb
Wind blowing thru park can cause lots of spray. Bring rain cover for gear if you are highly concerned about your gear getting wet.
No public parking in immediate area

Darn. You folks are doing a film event on a Saturday again.
I've got a question. It says "dinner and print review" but I didn't see any darkroom time in the schedule?
What prints are you reviewing?

Cool I got that shot. - 01-06-2009, 12:52 PM

No worries. The case for my field camera is big enough to hold a few 8x10s under the camera.

Grinning. I also have a secret weapon: Fujifilm FP-100c45.

It beats the daylights out of the Direct Print button on those little cameras.

I bet Y'all would trade your Direct Print button for my DEP switch.

Tom,

You get to pick the February date. Or whenever you will be in Houston.

Fair enough?

I just RSVP'd. This will be my first meet-up. I look forward to meeting you guys! Any thoughts on some strobist action at the fountains? I might even have a young lady that would model for us.

Cool Real models, oh my. - 01-07-2009, 08:56 AM

Models? What are those?

It's been so long since I pointed a camera at a model, I'm not sure I remember what to do. Can the models remain still for a long exposure on sheet film? The idea appeals to me. We just might be able to pull it off.

I think I have decided to leave the a/f cams at the house and break out the old body's and m/f primes. That should make it more fun:)

Now Velvia or Tri-maxx????

Tri-maxx? That's a new one. I should have some new 4x5 Velvia 50 and T-max 100 by then. The Velvia 50 is actually the original Velvia 50. It was made not too long before the original was discontinued.

Come on down and bring anything you like.

Sometimes I cheat and just cram the paper into my camera. I figured I would develop in the fountains ( This makes archival rinsing a breeze! )

The reality is that with so much of the analogue process happining in the dark room I can't post most of my better work.(Maby I should break down and read that book on Photoshop Elements. You know the one written in Mexico by Manual. )

The prints I will be presenting are from prior work.
