Oh My GIMP! - 05-24-2009, 07:37 PM

WHAT have I gotten myself into? I downloaded GIMP, and after playing around a bit and aimlessly clicking on random thing, its become clear that I'm going to have to go to college....

Other than reading the manual, because I dont understand all the terms, can anyone recommend anything that might help me do a few basic things? Are their any good picture heavy tutorials that you know of?

GIMP is a pretty nice program. Just a bit misunderstood.

GIMP is a powerful program, but I found it so hard to use that I went back to Photoshop.

Question GIMPShop - 05-24-2009, 11:02 PM

You might try "GIMPShop" which is GIMP with the desktop appearance and more familiar commands and functions of PhotoShop.

http://www.gimpshop.com/

Still pretty darn complicated. I try GIMP about every two years, and it still baffles me. Good luck.

Isn't GIMP 8 bit only? I saw some talk on the internet 6 months back that there may be a 16 bit version around somewhere.

Standing by for 16 bits worth of the GIMP.

It's all zeros and ones. How hard can that be?????????????????

Unfortunately, Gimpshop is version 2.2.11. It hasn't kept up with the current 2.6 of GIMP which has a lot of improvements including the interface.

Well its neither here nor there... apparently I dont have enough 'computer' to run the dang thing. Even though my computer is only a year old, its running Vista Home Premium and its the 32 bit version. I've always heard about the 'blue screen of death' that is common with Vista, but I've never had a problem with it... until last night. I got the first one right after I downloaded, installed, and was playing with GIMP. I got the "preparing to dump.... initializing dump" message, which I havne't a clue what it means, but it can't be good. I think it actually damaged something, since after that I wasn't able to get back online, my computer wasn't recognizing the wireless network. I'll have to check it out when I get home from work today.

With absolutely NO programming type knowledge, and absolutely NO graphic editing type knowledge, I'm thinking I'm going to have to go ALOT simpler.... Is 'PAINT' still an accessory? LOL

Photoshop Elements really isn't all that bad (as far as functionality or usability).

Strange. I haven't seen the Blue Screen of Death since Nice Try 4.0.

I bought Lisa a notebook computer in March. I got one with XP instead of Vista. Looks like I done good.

Try: paint.net (free)
http://www.getpaint.net/
My son uses it on his 32bit Vista Home premium machine and it works on my 64 bit box as well.

From the website...... It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool.

...or look at photofiltre. Free (small charge for commercial use)
http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm

...or Picasa as mentioned.

I have been getting this message for a while now. We'll try something and it will work for a while, then that ugly blue screen! My dad says it's the software, there is nothing wrong with the hardware. We'll see how long this "working" time lasts....

I have never heard of GIMP. I'll have to go check it out, but I don't think I will be installing it on this Vista computer...
