Keeping EXIF data in tact - 07-03-2009, 08:47 PM

Just curious how to keep EXIF data in tact for when I am posting images here, or other places. Here is my typical workflow. If you see a point when it's getting removed, let me know.

1) Take picture ()
2) Open files in DPP (Canon's Digital Photo Professional, for those non-canon shooters out there)
3) Use the quick check tool to pick out my best images
4) Brief edit in DPP, mostly for sharpening, WB correction.
5) Batch convert and save
6) Open select files in CS4
7) Edit to my hearts desire
8) Typically resize to 800x533 if I'm just using for web viewing
9) Save NOT using "save for web"
10) Upload to flickr to have a URL to pull from
11) Post away.

Would attaching an image, rather than using a URL make a difference?

Do you have to choose somewhere in PS to leave the EXIF in tact?

Here is a quick test to see if it is in tact. Thanks for any info.

Edit: just checked this image in firefox with my normal method of checking EXIF (added into the properties) and its not there.

Yeah, thats what I'm getting too. Going to post the same image in this post, but from my computer instead of a URL, lets see if that does the trick.

Edit: Yeah, still nothing, even when attached from my hard drive. As a side note, look how the quality seems to be different when attached, rather than linked to. I like the URL version much better (from the first post)

The first one (1024x683) from your flicker page is larger that the attached image (798x532). I'm on a laptop and can't see what would make it a better looking image other than that. I know one member links from Flicker and loses exif because of it. He posts in the nature section a lot. I don't why linking to flicker causes the exif loss. When I attach an image as your second one, it always has exif. I use CS3, don't have CS4 but don't understand why you are loosing exif. I usually save as but if it's there, even save should maintain exif. Don't see why you are loosing exif so far. In this thread, all the exif is there. http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...d.php?t=103120
Maybe you can attach one of those images and see if it keeps the exif?

thanks Roy. That's weird that the rangers pics have the exif. I did them the same way, and I believe they are even pulled from my flickr. If I weren't posting from my phone right now I'd look into it further, but it will have to wait till tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Your photos from the Rangers game are hosted at photobucket.

I know if you save for web in PS it will strip the exif. That's the only way I know for sure it will happen out of PS.

attaching images via the forum strips the exif data... sucks i know...

this is how i save jpg's to keep data:
http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=32675

now the image you hotlinked from flickr, is that the original size or a smaller optional displayed image. i think exif only displays on the "original" sized image linked from flickr. i could be wrong

Abel, is the exif stripped on this attachment? http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...d.php?t=103471

If it is then I'm able to see it. All my photos on the forum are attachments and as far as I know they show exif.

Most forums will resize images when you attach them to messages, IF they exceed the size limitations of the particular forum. It can lead to unexpected quality loss, since the images are being resized "behind your back", so to speak.

As far as the exif issue, check the "file info" in photoshop when you first import, then again just before you save. This might help you troubleshoot where you're losing the data.

BTW, I can see the exif on the dog photo in the post mentioned above

Did a test here with an original size photo and the large size from shots stored on flicker and Abel is correct, the EXIF only stays attached to the original size file.
