Graduated Neutral Density Filter - 08-01-2009, 11:37 PM

The GND Filter is a pretty common tool for landscape photographers. For some reason, when I switched to digital I stopped using my filters. Probably because you can sort of simulate most filters in FotoChop. It turns out that if you are using ACR 5.0 there's a GND Filter there. It works pretty well. Here's a half-a...err... not very good... example of how to use it.

Open the image in ACR. Like this one... yuck...

Instead of me typing a bunch of nonsense... I'll just link to people that really know what they are doing with the GND Filter.

Link #2 (this is a PDF file and it includes the adjustment brush too)

Link #3 (really good video on this one)

Lightroom has a similar tool that I have used to darken skies before. Makes a big difference.

Yeah... the links I supplied talk about the GND tool for LR too. It's good for a lot of things.

I've been experimenting with the gradient tool and a layer mask in Photoshop Elements 6.0. It looks promising. Hopefully, I'll get better.

Wouldn't it be faster to pop a filter on your lens? :D

No...

and

You can't control the filter gradient as easily...

and

You can use multiple GND's (see the video I linked to) if you use the tool in ACR
