converting RAW to DNG - 09-03-2009, 02:16 PM

OK, I upgraded to D700 just over a week ago, absolutely love the camera. My question today though is about converting my RAW images to DNG. I use Adobe Bridge and CS3 for my pp work but the new D700 RAW format is not compatible with the Adobe Bridge and CS3. Does anyone know if I am losing any image quality when I convert these files from RAW to DNG? Right now I am shooting RAW and in 14 bit. 2nd part of this question, if there is a significant degradation, is there an alternative conversion I can use?

Using the DNG Convertor to convert your NEF's to DNG will not cause any loss of quality, you'll get the same results from opening the DNG in Camera RAW as if you had been able to open the NEF directly.

I used DNG until I upgraded PS. With my new 7D I'll have to go back to the conversion because I'm not buying CS4 just to be able to work with .cr2 files from the new camera.

Canon is in cahoots with Adobe.

Tom,
Are you sure you want the 7D? There are several people who are bashing it on another thread!

Oh my God Lonnie you are right. How could I have made such a huge mistake ?
I guess I can take solace in the fact that I'll be the ONLY ONE who buys this camera. It will be a real collectors item in 18 months when the new 9D with beverage service and pet grooming comes out.

I'm either the smartest, or the most stupid photographer on earth.

Proprietary raw is a hangover from the days when camera makers thought they should be software manufacturers. Why they don't all use DNG and be done with is a mystery.

But at least four did and I shot two of them.

Users should start demanding DNG as a standard. Remember there was the time the morons at Nikon tried to encrypt their Raw.....

The 7D upgrade will be called the 70D or maybe the XUi?

When I import raw files into lightroom they all get imported as DNG.

Piggybacking on an older thread, I usually don't download the files from the camera. I just take the card and insert it into my computer. Now, what I have found is that when I open RAW files in CS4, PS tends to crash more often. Any ideas? Should I be downloading the files instead using the bridge and converting to DNG?

One more thing, when storage space is an issue. If I convert to DNG, should I delete my RAW files? Sould I delete the JPG generated by the camera? My concern is now I would have the RAW, DNG, and JPG files.
