Cool True or False? - 10-02-2009, 04:50 PM

In the Internet Gospel according to the Internet inventor Al Gore, photos destined for display on the internet must be in the JPEG file format and sRGB colorspace.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

JPEG is the preferred file format for now. BMP is just stupid for anything but small images due to the lack of compression. GIF is 8-bit only (total, not per channel), and therefore unsuitable for photographers. PNG was at one time meant to replace JPEG, but it hasn't really happened; and the lack of embedded profile support doesn't make it particularly attractive to photographers.

sRGB should be used as the color space for anything viewed on the web, if you want to maximize the number of people who will see it with correct colors. Only Safari and FireFox support color management (and neither is perfect). All those Internet Explorer users don't have ICC support, so using anything other than sRGB guarantees they won't see the correct colors.

well, they don't -have- to be in jpeg or use sRBG, but to get the closest match in your (and others) web browser to what you see in PS or LR, yes, they need to be jpg and sRGB.

try uploading a version pic that uses adobe or prophoto color spaces and see what it looks like in IE vs the same one in srgb. you'll see and get what happens.

Thanks for the detail everyone. I remembered the IE sRGB color space thing driving home.

Sounds like the answer is True.
