JPEG is the preferred file format for now. BMP is just stupid for anything but small images due to the lack of compression. GIF is 8-bit only (total, not per channel), and therefore unsuitable for photographers. PNG was at one time meant to replace JPEG, but it hasn't really happened; and the lack of embedded profile support doesn't make it particularly attractive to photographers.
sRGB should be used as the color space for anything viewed on the web, if you want to maximize the number of people who will see it with correct colors. Only Safari and FireFox support color management (and neither is perfect). All those Internet Explorer users don't have ICC support, so using anything other than sRGB guarantees they won't see the correct colors.
