Angry Question to all - 11-24-2009, 10:43 PM

I have noticed when I post pictures they look less than admirable sometimes when they are crisp and beautiful in the same file on my cpu.....I'm sure it is something I am not doing but I don't know where to start...I know calibrating my monitor and all will help but the colors are not off they just look like some of the resolution is lost ...I see others that are nice and crisp which is what they again look like on my computer...ok enough repetition...if any one can help feel free to chime in...thanks for any help you can offer!!!!

-Where do you upload the images to, are they hosted somewhere else or on TPF as attachments?

-Do you convert to sRGB before posting them?

-Do you sharpen the images after down-sizing them for the web?

right now i just attach them which is know is probably not best...

I have been chasing my tail on the color space issue because someone will tell me do one thing then I'll read something else...

As a matter of fact I forgot about sharpening after down sizing...is it recommended to sharpen once the image is the final size...??

If the image you upload as an attachment to TPF is bigger than about 295k, it will get automatically recompressed to a much smaller file that will have much worse quality than your original, so make sure you stay under the size limit.

You can work in whatever color space you want, but for best presentation for the greatest number of viewers you should always convert to sRGB when posting to the web. Most folks are viewing with browsers that don't support color management. An Adobe RGB image will look flat and under-saturated in such browsers.

Generally a bit of sharpening after down-sizing is a good idea, since the interpolation can introduce softness. How much sharpening you need to add will depend on how much the image was down-sized, what routine was used for the down-sizing, and to some extent it will depend on the image itself. Use a small radius (try something in the .33 - .50 range) or you will introduce halo artifacts to the image.
