Anyone running multiple RAW converters? - 11-30-2009, 11:10 AM

I eep going back and forth between DxO or Lightroom. Both have their strengths with the A900, and both have a couple weaknesses. My latest thought is why not use both?

DxO can export TIFF or DNG into Lightroom, so I can use DxO's strong points, like the lens corrections and better Sony color, and then run it through Lightroom and its sharpening and touch ups, along with LR's vastly better organization system. DxO can even pull photos right out of LR catalogs.

So, is anyone else running dual converters, or is it likely more trouble than it is worth?

I don't run them serially, but I do use both CaptureOne and ACR. I find that I can get better results from the PhaseOne P45 with C1 and of course I've been using ACR on the Nikon images since forever... I'm not sure what you're gaining by running them serially, I would think that might reduce the fidelity of the images somewhat since each raw developer is expecting the file has come directly from the sensor and will adjust it appropriately (default profile?).

I'd ask Jeff Kohn. He seems to be very well versed in this area.

Scott,

You're not using NX for any Nikon NEF files that "must have" the best processing? I know I'm not simply because the s/w is such a pain to use and is so dang slow. _/oe does use the Nikon s/w... guess he's just much more patient than I.

Capture NX? Nope don't use it. And honestly I don't believe it is the best processing available for NEF files. There are some things it does very well. One of those being moire reduction/elimination. Aside from that, I can do much better with ACR. And you're right, it's dog slow and somewhat painful to use from a UI perspective. YMMV.
