Can you transfer plug-ins to new programs? - 12-01-2009, 10:30 PM

I'm looking at buying some plug-ins for my Photoshop Elements 6 but am going to buy CS2 or 3 pretty soon. When I upload the new program, will my plug-ins automatically transfer over? Or is that something I will have to do manually?

I do not believe that plug ins are the same from PSE to PS CS3. PS uses Actions and PSE 7 was the first to use actions

You'll have to load the Plug-Ins into your current App (say like Elements as you mentioned), then when you upgrade to PhotoShop, you'll also have to again load the Plug-Ins into that App.

Charrie
I use CS2, PSE, and Paint Shop Pro...so I have a single folder where I put all my plugins. You just need to tell each programs where that folder is...in the programs preferences menu. Some plugins will not work on all programs, but I put them all in the same folder and let the program decide.

Forget CS2. Go with CS3 at least. You might try GIMP too (free).

Yeah, I've decided on CS3, especially since our local vo-tech is having a class next month. Perfect timing! Appreciate everyone's help!

The proper answer is (as almost always is the case)...

It depends.

There are some plug-ins that are shared between editing programs, some which are fixed for a single application, and some that can be coerced into multiplicity.

The safest way would be to re-install each plug-in for your new editing application.

At least that's my $.02 worth... YMMV.

My hard drive recently crashed on my iMac and I had to reinstall Aperture. Fortunately, I had saved the code for my HDR plug-in. I just typed it in and it worked. Good luck.
