CS4 and windows 7 - 12-06-2009, 07:36 PM

Is anyone else having nightmares trying to load CS4 onto a new computer with windows 7? Here I thought this mega computer would be the end all to all problems! My husband has spent over 7 hrs on the phone with Adobe and HP. Adobe even sent us a new CS4 program thinking that would help but it didn't. I know, I know....should have gone with Apple but it would have cost an obsene amount of money to get an Apple with what we wanted. As it is we sent 2K! Can anyone help? Please, I'm ready to shoot myself!

I've completed 5 installs of Windows 7 32-bit & 64-bit plus CS4 error free.

I hope Adobe/HP can solve your problem.

Sonny, don't you know that misery loves company?? No, I'm happy you haven't had any issues. My husband says thanks for the info. HP tried to tell us this was a global problem with Adobe.

Same here, several installs of CS4 on Windows 7, the latest in 64 bit. No problems so far. One note, all my installs were on custom machines (custom built, not HP, Gateway, Dell, etc). I have always had far less trouble from professional custom builds than those mass produced jobs.

A few hints that may or may not help.

1) Uninstall any and all HP software.
2) Try disabling antivirus software, if that fails, uninstall it.
3) Instead of using the auto-run installer, browse to the CD and find the setup program, right click on it, select run as administrator.
4) Are you doing a custom install? If so, don't. Let it install where it should.
5) Is this a new machine or an upgrade from Vista? If an upgrade, wipe and reinstall.
6) Did you have CS3 or other previous version? If so, make sure it is completely uninstalled (I know, most of the time you can run CS3 and CS4 together on the same machine, most of the time).
7) Have you run all Windows updates? If not, run them.

Allan

I installed CS 4 on a new Dell Precision with no issues. Except that I have to figure out all the settings I had on my old PC.

I'm not trying to gloat, but your initial post was pretty vague. No worries, Allan did an excellent job asking all the good questions.

This is one reason I hate the fact everyone jumps on the Apple bandwagon. Immediately blame the PC.

Again, I really hope you can work out the problem.

Do you still have the old machine? If so you can copy your settings over, since for a lot of the important stuff like workspaces, presets, etc they're stored in files under your user profile rather than in the registry.

In Vista & Windows 7 they're under

C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe

(the path is slightly different on older OS's)

Thanks Allan for the hints. Some of them my husband has tried, some not. Crossing our fingers one of your ideas will work. It is a brand new computer. Looking forward to your help Rich. You guys are so awesome...better than Adobe, better than HP.

One thing that would really help is if you told us what happened when you tried to install it. Does the installer even start? Does it actually start the installation? Does it finish the installation? Does it not run after installing? Answers to these can really help us narrow it down.

Allan

PS. As for your comment on Apples, I get them in the shop too so no, they are not perfect.

If the first install with CS4 goes bad, you have to run a CS4 cleaning utility to clean out the files. I also go into the registry and delete the adobe keys, clear temp files, go to C:/programs/common files and delete all that is adobe, delete from program files also manually. Then clear the recyle bin, reboot and try again.

Be careful with that, it will also delete your Acrobat reader, flash, Lightroom, and anything else Adobe. While I agree with your theory, I would not advise a non-professional to start messing with the registry and deleting files manually from the Program Files directory. Especially when we do not know yet if it was the installer that failed, and if so, did it even run at all?

True, but LR, Acrobat and flash are free and minor compared to PS. I too have run into issues with Master Collection and speak from experience.

It worked for me and there are many threads for installer failures on Adobe's forums etc. My first post stands, contact me and I will give a hand.

I do have the box and I have it on the network as I migrate files over. It is XP but I'll have to look for a similar path to get those settings. Thanks.
