Question Textures... - 01-21-2010, 08:25 PM

Seriously? Is using textures as easy as adding a layer over an image and filling that layer with a jpg of say concrete or tree bark, then turning the opacity down to about 22% and the fill down to about 30-50% and using a layer mask to strategically remove it? If it is this easy then I'm very dissapointed that I've waited this long to try it.

Shoot a real double exposure that works well. Wait that's not post-processing.

Well it's a little more than that. Changing the mode of the texture layer gives you a whole variety of new effects. Also lasso the skin after the effect and Gaussian blur with about a 4 setting and it's a much better look on the skin.

I usually dial that blur up to 21

I haven't tried it but in my mind I have a theory that should work. You should be able to take a photo of a texture (concrete, dirt, brushed aluminum etc.) I'm assuming like a macro or something, then make a layer mask with blending option set to overlay. You should then be able to brush away the texture from the subject. Am I wrong? If someone knows, I'd like to know how far off I am...

I Just use TRA Textures now. They have a slick interface that gives you previews and it already applies the layer mask so you can add or subtract the texture amount in certain areas of the photo.

Can you explain the 'changing the mode' part? What do you mean by that?

I tried a few different ones:

'using textures in photoshop'
'textures in ps'
'apply textures in photoshop'

another tip - create a large high quality brush out of some of your favorite textures.. now you no longer have to open a seperate image! just add a layer and brush away.

If you like using textures and have a lot of them, then I suggest you try Totally Rad Dirty Pictures.

I use it often and LOVE it!
