Remove PSE before installing CS3? - 01-27-2010, 10:24 PM

I've got Photoshop Elements 6 and was told I would have to uninstall it before loading CS3. If I do, then what happens to all the brushes and effects I've bought over the years? Can I transfer those to CS3?

First; Unless Adobe tells you to uninstall PSE before installing photoshop, you can pretty much ignore what you were told. All versions of Photoshop install without writing over each other. There is no reason to believe that there would be a compatibility issue with leaving PSE on the system.
Second; Not all brushes and effects designed for PSE are compatible with CS3. You will have to check them individually either before or after you install CS3.
The required location(path) of your brushes and "effects" is different for CS3 and CSE. You will need to copy and paste your CS3 compatible items from their location(path(s)) in CSE into the correct location(path(s)) for CS3 in order to have them available for use in CS3.

Well, I can't speak for PSE v.6, but I currently have PSE v.7 and CS3 both running on the same PC and so far no problems.

I don't have enough RAM to have both installed on my desktop, plus why would I have a need to use both?

You're killin' me here. RAM is only utilized by programs that are running, and not by programs that are not, with a few exceptions. Uninstalling CSE will not remove all your registry entries that are associated with CSE, so that's moot also.

As for using both... You should learn to use CS3 for everything you can, but in the very likely event that a brush or "effect" you like to use in not CS3 compatible, why wouldn't you apply that brush or "effect" in CSE, while you migrate your skillset from CSE to CS3?

Computers are definitely a learning curve with all of the changes that happen ...

For some of us that are "Geeks" in this world ... it's a breeze ...

But I understand your frustration with not understanding the computer ...
EX:
- My brother is a full out DJ with TurnTables and what not ... still doesn't know how to burn a DVD on his computer.
- My good friend who is also a Camera Operator for a major company, doesn't know the difference between Vista and OSX ...

(This was all in your defense)

So I understand.

To also help: You should be just fine like many others have said already having both on there. Of course you do take up some Hard Drive Space ... but if you do your final work on another Hard Drive (Recommended) then you should be fine.

-- I have CS3 PS, CS3 Illustrator, CS3 After Effects, Final Cut Studio, Avid Media Composer and CS3 Flash on my computer ... An Apple Laptop ... and all still work fine.

So again ... you should be fine.

Yea, and as KdLaneJr said ... your RAM is only for opened programs not closed ones. Just run CS3 alone and your filters and creative layers will render much faster.

Have fun jumping into the world of CS3.

I would run a back up of all your brushes and actions just incase they get lost during the process.

Here's a quick question, since we may have a PC lingo mix match.

When you said you don't have enough RAM to have both installed, are you referring to the memory or the hard drive space on the PC?

Because if it is the latter, then I would understand why the suggestion would have been made to uninstall the other program if you're running short on space on your hard drive.

Uhh, don't know. Had my son's "geek" roommate in college build me a new computer last May when mine got fried by a lightning strike, but he couldn't add anymore memory to it. That's all I remember. Don't know the specs. How would I find out?

Just right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select 'Properties'

You'll pretty much see the main detail on that primary window like the processor info and the amount of RAM installed. You can close the properties window after you've made note of those numbers.

To see your hard drive size and space, you'd double click on the My Computer icon so you can get to your drive, then right-click on the drive and select Properties and it'll give you the basic info on that screen as to the size of used, free, and total capacity.

Thanks for your help, John! Here's what it says:

AMD Athlon 7750 dual-core processor
2.71 GHz, 1.93 GB of RAM
Hard drive - free 430 GB, total 465 GB

Now what?

Well giving those hard drive numbers, you got PLENTY there.
And looks like you have 2GB of RAM ... even though Microsoft says 1.9.

Now What?
You may be ok to install CS3 and have ok performance. Your RAM is what is going to slow you down. (And uninstalling PSE would make no difference)

It would be nice if you could up the RAM from 2GB to 4GB, but I know you've already said your son's geek friend said there was room for no more. But I'd like to know more about what he meant by that. If there are only two slots in which to install memory, then you should still be able to replace the 1GB sticks with 2GB sticks. Or there may be four slots and each has 512RAM, in that case, those could be replaced with 1GB chips. I think you can see where I'm kinda going...it depends on the configuration within the PC.

The other kicker would be what operating system is on there.

The flavor of XP or Vista (and Windows 7) will also determine what'd be the max amount of RAM recognized by the operating system. Depending on which OS and what edition, you could be limited from as little as 3GM of RAM up to 192GB RAM.

So, just for example...if what you have is XP Home 32bit, your max would be 3GB of RAM that the operating system would recognize. You can have 4GB RAM in the PC, but that version of windows will only use 3.

Now say you have Vista Home Basic 64bit; it will recognize up to 8GB of RAM.

Sorry to throw so much geek speak at you in one paragraph.

Hope it helps make some sense.

Oh, and just in case anyone's curious. Here's a link to MS list of memory limits for the ump'teen versions of operating systems they have.
