Canon T2i - Unable to read RAW in Lightroom or PS Elements - 03-19-2010, 06:51 PM

Do I really have to wait on Adobe or is there some way around this? I primarily shoot in RAW and was enjoying the beta version of LR 3 when I got my new camera. Now I can only edit the raw in the Canon Digital Photo Professional software.

I just got my T2i in yesterday and noticed that too. I'm so new to all this I just thought LR couldn't work with RAW formats, so I converted them to JPG to play around with them.

What versions of PS and LR do you have? ACR 5.x is only good on LR2 and CS4

I have Photoshop Elements 7 and Lightroom Beta 3, neither can open the raw files from my T2i. I was told when Adobe releases the update they will. I thought the update was released today but it only works on the full version of PS and LR2 as you pointed out.

What do I need to watch for, in order to get PS Elements 7 or 8 and LR Beta 3 to work with my camera?

Adobe loves to force your hand at updating the software. when new camera's come out adobe is the first to make sure you have the latest software. Ie. when the d700 came out, you had to have cs4 to read the raw because ACR 4.x wasn't compatable with CS3 even though CS3 was still a valid release.

PSE supports the latest ACR:
Install Camera Raw 5.6 for Photoshop Elements 8 and 7 on Windows

1. Close Photoshop Elements 7.
2. Download Camera Raw 5.6 from Adobe - Photoshop Elements : For Windows : Camera Raw 5.6 update.
3. Extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the ZIP file you downloaded. (Extract only the Camera Raw.8bi file that is at the top level of the ZIP file. Do not extract the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder that is inside the ZIP file. This folder contains the 64-bit edition of the Camera Raw plug-in, which is compatible only with the 64-bit edition of Photoshop CS4.)

Note: ZIP files are compressed files which contain other files. On Windows Vista, you can extract Camera Raw.8bi by right-clicking on the file you downloaded, choosing Extract All, clicking Extract, and then opening the newly-created Camera_Raw_5_6 folder. On Windows XP, you can extract Camera Raw.8bi by right-clicking on the file that you downloaded, choosing Open With > Compressed (Zipped) Folders, and then dragging Camera Raw.8bi to your Desktop.

For Photoshop Elements 7

* If you are using a 32-bit edition of Windows, then move Camera Raw.8bi into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing plug-in file, then click Yes or Overwrite.
* If you are using a 64-bit edition of Windows, then move Camera Raw.8bi into C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing plug-in file, then click Yes or Overwrite.

1. To install Camera Profiles, extract the CameraProfiles.exe file from the ZIP file that you downloaded. Next, double-click on CameraProfiles.exe and then follow the on-screen instructions.

WOW!

Thank you so much for the directions and the time you spent! I was going to try that but my camera the Canon T2i is not supported under the 5.6 version only the new 5.7. I extracted that file and tried to install it and it wouldnt because I dont own Photoshop. So...I downloaded the trial version of Photoshop and IT INSTALLED! I thought I was home free but it only the trial version works. I still cant get Lightroom Beta 3 or my Photoshop Elements 7 to open them.
I looked for a file similar to what you talked about and was going to try and drop it in PS Elements but there wasnt one. Any tips. Again, thank you VERY much!

EDIT: I found the Camera Raw.8bi file that was being used by the full version of PS and copied it to my PS Elements but it says it isnt compatible, when you try to open the file.

On a side note, I have never used a DNG converter. I tried the new 5.7 version today and it did successfully convert my RAW files so I could open them in PS Elements 7 and LR Beta 3....but...JEEPERS that conversion takes forever.

I don't know if you guys saw this, but they released Lightroom 2.7.

I just downloaded it yesterday and it fixed my problem with LR 2.6 not reading the T2i raw files. I only have LR, so the other fix didn't help me. But, this one did. Now I'm good to go.
