CS3 to CS4 Help please - 04-01-2010, 02:02 AM

Hey guys and gals I could sure use some help here, I already researched the forum here for transferring PS actions and only found one thread and that one didn't help me much.

What I have already done
Setup Network and allowed folder share
Copied from APP folder to App Folder (I THINK)

Here is what is working:
Actions

Here is what is not working:
Filters, like Portraiture, NIK Color FX, and others

Is there something I didn't do?

I am transferring these files from CS3 on a Desktop to CS4 on a laptop.

Anyone that can help please let me know.

Thanks,

What do you mean by not working? Are they not showing up in CS4 at all, or do they not not work when you select them? Are you using the 64-bit version of CS4? If so, they might not be compatible and you will have to use the 32-bit version of CS4 (which is already installed alongside the 64-bit version).

Here's a snippit from Nik's FAQ page that may be useful:

Quote:
I upgraded to Adobe Photoshop CS4, I don't see my Nik Software plug-ins. How do I access my Nik Software plug-ins, or move them over to Adobe Photoshop CS4?

When you upgrade to Adobe Photoshop CS4, Nik Software filters are not automatically copied over from the older version of Adobe Photoshop. To move current Nik Software plug-ins (Dfine 2.0, Viveza 2, Color Efex Pro 3.0, Silver Efex Pro, and Sharpener Pro 3.0) over to Adobe Photoshop CS4, do the following:

Please note: If you are using older Nik Software products such as Dfine, Color Efex Pro 2.0, and Sharpener Pro 2.0 in Photoshop CS4, click here , or if you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, click here.

1. Navigate to the following location (*XX indicates the old Adobe Photoshop version number - e.g. CS3):

Macintosh: Macintosh HD | Applications | Adobe Photoshop XX | Plug-Ins
Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop XX\Plug-Ins

2. Drag and drop the entire Nik Software folder located in the Plug-Ins folder in Adobe Photoshop, as indicated in Step 1, to the desktop.

3. Navigate to the following location:

Macintosh: Macintosh HD | Applications | Adobe Photoshop CS4 | Plug-Ins
Windows: C:\Programs Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-Ins

4. Drag and drop the Nik Software folder that was moved to the desktop into the Plug-Ins folder in the new version of Adobe Photoshop as indicated in step 3.

5. Restart Adobe Photoshop CS4. When Adobe Photoshop launches, the Nik Software filters should now be available via the filters drop-down menu or in the Nik Selective Tool.

If you would like to reinstall the software, please ensure that the correct destination directory (as indicated above in step 3) is selected during the installation.

Run the executable that comes when you purchased the filters. The three you listed all have executable's that will load it into CS4.

FYI, I have always had a problem with filters in CS4. I think it is related to X64 architecture and the plug ins.

If you are looking for the CS4 action location, it is c:/user/[yourname]/app data/Roaming/adobe/photoshop cs4/presets/actions

Scott & Rich,
Thanks for taking the time to reply I appreciate it, after Scott mentioning the 32 bit version I moved all my filters to their prospective places and so far they are now showing up.

I wasn't even aware it would try to run 2 different versions of PS, since I just upgraded to CS4 and now can't wait to get CS5 with all its new tools, but am wondering if all these things will also have the same problems in CS5, and knowing Adobe they probably will and its not really Adobe's fault I don't think, I think its just they change their versions so often that 3rd parties just can't keep up.

Thanks a ton for your help, will have to move some more stuff now and hopefully it will all work.

Thanks again,

Stephen Gibson

When you load CS4, It loads 2 versions that are located in c:program files and c:program files (x86). THey are the 64 and 32 bit versions.
