Resizing for dummies? - 05-01-2010, 01:49 AM

I noticed the Vista image viewer will do all sorts of editing, except for resizing. My wife likes to post snapshots and the occasional product photo, but since I keep all the cameras set to max quality, that can be a bit of a problem.

Explaining to her how to do it in Gimp or Photoshop is a bit much. Anybody got a recommendation for a dead simple program to resize, maintaining aspect ratio?

Batch resize with jpeg compression level change would also be a nice feature, since I occasionally catch myself with a big group of already-edited 10MP photos that I want to send to someone, but don't want to tie up all the bandwidth when 1024x768 at 85% quality would be more than enough for the recipient's needs. Opening each one, resizing and saving gets old pretty quickly - especially when I'm using the older, slower laptop that can take a minute or two per photo just to get them opened and saved again.

Lightroom will do that easily enough via the export feature. A bit pricey though just for that feature.

I have two actions for auto resizing landscape & portrait oriented images. I could have used just one, but I like my landscape images to be shorter than portraits. It really is easy to create and use, plus if you already have the software, it's free.

Hi Bob!
Did you mean the "export for email option"?? I would be really grateful for an explanation as I use Lightroom and I need some compression help.

Thanks a lot!

Unless these are RAW files the easiest way if you are a Windows user is the Image Resizer Powertoy at http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe for XP or here for Windows 7/Vista

A simple right click on an image or folder of image gives these options;

I think we have a winner. I think I'll put this on my machine too; I hate loading Gimp or Photoshop just to prep a dozen 10M product photos that will never be viewed at over 800x600.

Here's another good choice. From the web site: ...convert, rename, resize, crop, rotate, change color depth, add text and watermarks to images in a quick and easy batch mode. And it's FREE.

I use the "Image Viewer" (also free, and actually a decently capable editor) when I don't need layers or pixel-level editing. It doesn't support watermarking, though.

Depending on your spouse, FSResizer may be more than she wants to learn. But _you_ may end up using it...
