Lightroom question - 05-13-2010, 09:11 AM

I have an odd thing with my jpegs and home printing out of Lightroom. When I print an 8x10 the photo is fine. If I try to print a 4x6 the photo is grainy or blurred. What am I doing wrong?

Original images were shot RAW, edited and then exported as JPEG at 100% quality.

** this is home printing too on an HP photo printer.

Are you printing directly from within LR via the Print Module?

I previewed it this way.

I guess I should clarify that the jpeg I burned to DVD were having this print problem. My client said she couldn't print at home on her own computer. I went into LR to see how the images I have on my computer looked on a print preview--8x10 fine, 4x6 and wallets grainy/blurred.

Never had this problem. Most of my clients purchase prints from my SmugMug site or have a lab print photos for them. Never had anyone want to print their own.

Is this the same image that prints fine 8x10 but prints badly 4x6? If so then my guess is you have set something wrong in the print preferences of the printer.

If it is a different image then my guess would be resolution is to low or the file is corrupted (preview looks fine, but original is bad). I have had a image get corrupted but the preview looked fine. This happened because the preview was made before the original got corrupted. Hope that makes sense :)

I'm thinking a problem with resolution as well. However, without actually seeing the image and knowing your export settings, it's hard to say for sure what the problem is.

Well, regardless of the problem, it is easily fixed. Go to the edited RAW file and export it... restricting the long edge length to 1800 pixels... 300 DPI... 90% quality... JPG. If you open that image on your computer it should be very clear at 100%. Send them that file... but keep in mind that it is only good for printing 4x6" prints with because it's long edge is 1800 pixels.

That will at least let you have more time to figure out the problem and keep the client happy.

My uneducated guess is that the picture is being "fit" to a 4x6 which is not the same proportions as the 8x10.
