I use a free B&W Plugin from photo-plugins.com .. flexible, lets you control the levels at individual color tones as well as overall gamma.

the best way to convert to B&W I've found is through: Photoshop/Image/adjustments/Channel mixer, and make sure the Monochrome box at the bottom of the dialogue box is checked. Then tweak the source channels to your liking, done... I seem to get better contrast, brighter highlights, and darker shadows this way then any other technique or software.

If you choose to use the channel mixer method to convert to black & white, here are some settings that mimic some of the older black and white film.

I have 10 of those films ready to go. And several more not on that list.
I never did pay attention to the one film & one developer rule.
Thanks for the list Don. Since I can make direct comparisons, it will be interesting to see how well the table works.

There is a mistake on the chart regarding Ilford Pan F. The setting for RED should be 33, not 3.
