HELP! Uploading RAW images... - 08-15-2010, 11:13 PM

I have been shooting in RAW and tried to upload my photos to my PC and none of the RAW photos even show up in the uploading box as if the photos weren't saved on the memory card.

I'm sure this is a question already answered on TPF, but seeing as there are 51+ pages..I figured I'd just ask!

Do I need to have specific software?

What should I do? THANKS all!!!!

Yes, you will need RAW conversion software. I was able to use Photoshop CS4 with RAW files from my d40, but not with my d90, but I got Lightroom 3 and it processes the images fine from the d90

Well I have LR 3 (not Beta)..will that work?
But how do I even get the images to show up on the computer? They don't even pop up when I upload them, as if they're not even there.

Thanks BTW for your help! :o)

A couple of things:

- Just a minor correction, when you say upload it usually means your copying/move files to a server, the correct term should be download or copy to your PC (minor but helps in describing future problems).

- so back to your issue, first things first, can you describe dow do you normally download your images?

- do you run a Nikon Utility program? do you go straight to My Computer and located your camera's Icon? does your computer have the up-to-date Nikon drivers?

What camera body are you using?

The more details you provide the easier to help you out.

I usually open Lightroom, File - Import, and then select my memory card as the folder and they show up, but if I open the memory card folder to browse, the images still show up as icons, but cannot be viewed until I do the conversion

I plug in my USB and a few seconds and a box pops up "What would you like Windows to do?" with some options. I have tried the "copy images to computer or folders" and "Import using LR"
I got the images to show up on LR, but when trying to import I get an error message saying it couldn't import them, UGH!

I don't have Nikon drivers, did this come with the camera? I purchased mine a few yrs ago so I'm not sure what came with it..

OH! Maybe that's why I'm getting the error saying LR can't import them, I will have to try that. But unfortunately- my battery just died!

So do I need software to convert them?

Simple fix. Do you have a card reader? If not fine also.

Open LR
click File>import photos
In the box that pops up in a moment, the top left corner allows you to select your device. Select the D40 or your card.
The thumbnails will show up in the import box
select all and click import.

You do not need specific drivers or any other software other than Lightroom.

Glad you sorted it out.

I usually download all my raws using the Canon Utility software that I got from their website and then manually import the files into LR.

Thanks, I didn't realize how much of a pain it would be, but I love how the photo turn out in RAW.

Thanks again :D

It took me a minute to get used to using LR3, but being able to do batch conversions instead of one at a time is going to end up saving me a LOT of time

Oh I bet! It takes my LR3 a minute but it's not too bad, just a pain and something extra to do...(as if there wasn't enough...right?) lol
