CS5 vs. Extended - 09-10-2010, 06:38 PM

Hi All,

I've been hearing multiple different things from multiple different people, so I thought I'd ask the Texas Photo Forum crowd.

I've been looking to purchase Photoshop CS5, and saw an extended version. Is the extended version still the full version of Photoshop CS5, PLUS extra features? Thats what I read off the website.

I read somewhere else that you have to already have an existing version of Photoshop before you can buy the CS5 extended version, but thought thats what upgrades were for?

Basically, I want to know if I can get Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended and still get Photoshop..

Yes, the Extended version is the full PS plus some extra features. The extra is mostly 3D. You can either buy Extended as a new product, or you can upgrade an existing extended or regular PS (though obviously the price is different :-).

Adobe should have a comparison page I'd advise you to look for, since it's pretty likely the additional features won't be of any use to you.

Another thing you guys might know.. I was going to buy the student/teacher edition of CS5 and Lightroom 3 through Amazon until I was told that it is illegal to use that software for the purpose of making money, i.e. having a photography business..

I contacted someone through Ecommerce Framework and was told that there is no difference between the "student teacher" version and the "education" version in terms of functionality as the full retail version you get from adobe, but is priced differently because the assumption is that you're using it for educational purposes.

I guess I'm just confused by all this.. Software and computer lingo is usually pretty foreign to me. What do I need to make it "legal"? I'm assuming the software must come with a retail license, but if its the same thing, how can they tell?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I appreciate any help!

Thanks!

Well, I can't speak definitively, but as far as I know no such restriction exists. You have to be sure to meet the eligibility requirements, but the only thing I could find regarding use restrictions is at http://www.adobe.com/education/stude...gibility.html:

Restrictions on use

You may purchase only one license of any Adobe Student and Teacher Edition product. This license may be used only on your privately owned computer.

Obviously you would want to contact Adobe to be sure.

The academic issue is not supposed to be used for commercial purposes, but iirc, once you've completed you academic endeavors.., it is okay to start using it for commerical purposes.

As Bill suggested, talking to Adobe is the best way to get the correct answer.

Thanks all! I don't know if there are restrictions to a teacher buying it for her salary-limited daughter, who will in turn be buying it from her.. A lot of stuff to check in on. :-/
