Anybody using Capture One 5? - 09-14-2010, 09:23 AM

I am just wondering whether anybody is using Capture One 5. I just wanted to know whether this software really makes a difference regarding correct skin tones...

I shoot weddings 95%. I currently use PS and LR. Is it worth getting Capture One? Did it improve your photography as much as the developers claim?

The developers of the software claim: "Notice the difference in the colors and skin tone. In the JPEG to the left you can see a rough transition between reddish skin tones. To the right you have the Capture One 5.2 portrait where the skin has the same color and a beautiful smooth transition."

Thanks,
Otto

I use C1 for my PhaseOne P45 digital back. I just downloaded 5.2 this morning and haven't had a chance to play with the new features. I shoot primarily with the MFDB in the studio and use my Nikon D3 outdoors. So far I don't see a huge advantage to using C1 on the Nikon NEF files, but then again I've been using ACR for 4 years and have a pretty good handle on raw development using that tool. If I were to push that aside and use only C1 for a couple of months, I'm sure it would do just fine, but for the moment, I'm much more productive using ACR+PS CS5. One additional caveat is that I'm a portrait artist and only produce a small number of images from any one shoot. You should get another opinion if your output is significantly higher.

Good luck and make sure to check out the video tutorials. That's the best way to learn how to use the tools in C1. They aren't very intuitive if you ask me...

I used it for past year, b/c its one of very few RAW processing programms that supports all the gear i am shooting with.

Their skin tools are kind of interesting. Its not magic bullet that will fix everything for you, but it allows you to take care of certain issues, and have consistent skin tone through the whole set of selected photographs.

But.

It wont improve your photography :) Only you can improve it, with your eyes and education about lighting , composition and such :)

Oh and there is no magic "make it cool" button.

But its well built, has some interesting features and fast enough. Load trial and try for yourself, its not like you got much to loose.

The only advantage (actually its a dis advantage) is ...
when you need to shoot live tethered w remote customer client review at the shoot.
This is only when shooting MFDSLR Phase One in studio.
Since your client will prob have loads of input and changes
there should be a bottle of rum nearby every time you use Capture One.

It's only a disadvantage if you point the display so they can see it...

I shoot tethered in the studio 100% of the time because otherwise I might as well shoot film. The LCD on my P45 is useless for image review. I only really pay attention to the computer display when setting up the lighting and verifying critical focus. Most of the time it's shoot, wait for the beep, and shoot again.

Of course, YMMV.

When you work for Madison Ave they review in NYC via live remote link.
This is the only reason to use Cap One - unless you are a rum drinker like me.
The 60MP Back LCD as well as all other parts of Phase One Camera are awesome.
