Need some guidance creating a script in Photoshop

I don't know much about creating scripts in Photoshop, and google has just confused me more.

What I want to do is create a script that will take about 20 different psd files in a directory, each having a single masked layer, open them, apply the layer mask, copy, and then paste them in an existing PSD file as layers.

I can do it manually, but it's a bit more time consuming than I like, and I know there's a better way. I don't think I can do this using an "action".

Has anyone had any success with something like this?

Yes you can do it with actions. You will need to make sure in the action PS knows what to copy.
Make sure you have the process of what you want to do. Record the action.

Then go to: File>Automate>Batch and run the action on the directory where the files are located.
