Question Why is this happening? - 09-30-2010, 09:44 AM

Process:

-Import .NEF into LR
-Minor adjustments for sat/clar/cont/vib/sharp/noise
->Edit in Portraiture for LR, saved as .tiff
->Edit in CS4

The problem comes when the .tiff is taken from LR into PS. The attached picture is what I get in CS4.

Could this be because Portraiture is 15 day trial version, or did I jack up some settings somewhere?

Have you exceeded the 15 days for Portraiture?

No. I just downloaded it yesterday. It works fine as long as I stay in LR. If I take the .tiff into PS is when I get this.

Try a different file type like PSD, and see what happens.

Are you saving as a layered tiff? Try just saving from LR as a PSD file. Or just even as a JPG. Once you have done the majority of your work in LR editing saving the output files as high resolution jpgs is fine for 99% or work. I routinely do just that for weddings. All raws are edited in LR and then output as 100%/Level 12 jpgs. From there any final tweaks (major cloning/certain actions) are made via Photoshop and then the finals are output as 90%/Level 10 jpgs to clients. Never had a single issue and I produce 12x12 albums all the time and 20x30 canvas/prints frequently.

Even my art directors these days ask for jpgs over tiffs for most work. TIFFs take up so much space and they are such a legacy format anymore ADs either want jpg or the raw, either of which I will happily provide. That's all covered in my proposals...

Thanks Pete. Anytime I am working with a RAW file, and take it into PS, once I save it in PS it goes back into LR as a .tiff and it is stacked with the original. From there I export the .tiff as a 100% .jpg.

I never thought about the file formats though... and if Portraiture is saving as a layered tiff, then perhaps not all of them are making it into PS... if that makes sense.

you gotta change it in your settings in LR - for how it handles files.

Why the extra step of saving as a tiff? You can stack with the PSD version if that is the way you like to run your workflow. Especially if you are outputting to JPG as a final format. Adding a TIFF to the mix after photoshop and before the output JPG just seems to be an extra file that really does nothing for you since all the programs (lr, port, ps) work with PSDs and they have all the info. If you are running 16 bit files then you are really asking for some huge file sizes in your PSDs and tiffs.

If you find what's giving you the issue, please let us know!

Good luck!
