Processing Style Help - 10-21-2010, 03:38 PM

I've tried numerous things to match this style and still am missing something...
Can anybody breakdown this style if it's how they shoot? Or perhaps help me achieve this look?
Here are some examples:
http://www.iamaposer.com/?p=4583
(specifically the one of the photographer on the rail)
POPPITTS Sergio Mottola Photography, LLC // The Blog // Tacoma, Seattle, Phoenix Wedding and Portrait Photography
(all of his work is gorgeous as well)

Both appear very similar to me. Low aperture settings, tilt/shift occasionally, etc.

Any help?
Thanks!

that's tilt shift... you can do it one of two ways, buy an expensive lens for it or process it in photoshop with the lens blur filter.

for the photoshop part, I learned from this tutorial... How to use Photoshop's Lens Blur tool for tilt-shift fakery (Part 1 of 2)

but there is an easier way to do that with quickmasks (hitting Q, making selection, hitting Q again to make the selection, then going to lens blur and playing around.

Some guys are just real secretive about their processing style. Guess it won't hurt to ask.

I know what a tilt/shift lens is.

I have to agree with this statement. I've asked several photog's about a specific image, how it was processed etc etc and got nothing, bubkiss, zip, zero, zilch.... So I experiment a lot and now I have people asking me!!

Patrick was just trying to help. That's why you are here. No need for that response. I think you meant to say..."Thank you Patrick for offering a couple of suggestions."

I also believe I hinted that I had an idea what a tilt/shift lens was. No need to step into the ring for him. If he had a problem, I'm sure he would voice it.

Since you asked about the processing and it was tilt-shift style work, they offered that. If you knew it was that, then why ask what it is, right? If you are looking for a different answer, try rephrasing your question instead of just being snippy to the people trying to help you.

Perception is more important than reality and I think the perception is you are coming off very curt.

Processing referring to the tones, saturation, possible actions, etc used on the image.
Tilt-Shift is not processing, unless it's faked in photoshop.
I'm not being snippy. I said thank you to the person. Again, if hue-e has a problem with it, I'm sure it would have been addressed by now. Sorry I hurt your feelings.

Back on topic:
Does anybody have some clues to this processing? It has to be something subtle I'm missing.

I think I have an idea as to how it's achieved. Let me tool around in lightroom and photoshop for a little while. If I can get something similar, I'll make sure to share my results.

If you're talking about the coloration on Sergio's photos, it looks like cross processing to me. Give NIK Color Efex Pro a shot. They have a real nice cross processing filter.

After playing around in photoshop for a few hours, or more so the better part of last night, these are the results I was able to produce. If these two are similar enough for you, let me know and I will PM you with a rough breakdown.

^^

Tyler, could you share with us what you did with the above photo to achieve those results? I've been trying to figure out how to do a similar style of processing, but haven't been able to get what I want. I think knowing how you did that would be a good place to start experimenting as well.

Thanks,
Jeff
