Corrupt CR2 files-Please Help! - 11-02-2010, 02:10 PM

Hello everyone,

I just shot a wedding 2 weeks ago and while uploading my files one of my cards turned out to be corrupted, some of the files were not even displayed on the camera and some did but after transferring them to my computer they are not being recognized by either Photoshop CS4, Lightroom or Preview, and through Canon's software I was able to transfer them in and view them but that is all, I cannot convert them, save them or anything else. Some of the files were also renamed by my card from IMG to AMG or IHG, etc.

The CR2 files are actually too large to upload here

Thanks in advance

First don't do a darn thing to the card and mark it as bad. (write to it, erase, transfer copy...nothing)

Then, either send it to me or download the Recovery Pro that comes with Sandisk cards and try that.

I already tried a couple of recovery softwares, I have 3 copies of the files and all are the same. I think that the problem is how the files were embedded within the card. they are CR2s but the programs cannot read them or give me an error message when trying to convert them or save them.

What are you opening them with? Have you tried ACR or lightroom?

I have used, Lightroom, Photoshop, Preview, and DPP for Canon. On DPP I can see them and open them, but they are pixelated previews and I cannot export them or convert them, and in all other programs it gives me an error message saying that the type of file is not supported by the program.

I just opened them with Bridge and all I get is a small thumbnail, I also noticed that the Camera Data is missing, but the file size is 11MB or so depending on the image. I have 20+ images with the same problem. Any ideas?!

Have you tried photorec by Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery Company? I think they charge a small price (under $25) for the software. It is easy to use, doesn't require installation, and will recover just about every image ever stored on a corrputed card. The images are recoverd as IMG files. I've used it a several times to recover cards for friends and was able to view, edit etc. the images in Photoshop.
