When I select a photo to view in lightroom, the thumbnail image darkens. When I move on to another thumbnail, it does not get brighter again. Any idea why?
I used standard image output in the camera shooting RAW. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I've noticed this too. When I'm flipping through a shoot, as soon as I move to a new image, it's normal, then it darkens after the preview refines. Usually takes like a second or two.
I'm used to it now, and it's not that bad, but when I view 5D MkII files on there, they get REALLY dark. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to turn it off?

Sounds like you're shooting in RAW. The small preview images are JPEGs and are generated in your camera. They are based on the camera settings. The full size view that results after you click on an image is the RAW image only. There was a video posted on here that explains it better than I can.

Thanks!! I will do a search for the video. I do shoot in RAW. I was worried with the dark thumbnails especially as I have to bump the brightness +20 when I print to get the print output to match what I see on the screen (using calibrated monitor and ICC printer profiles).

Yeah I shoot RAW also. When/if you find the video, let me know, and I'll do likewise.

One thing you can do is turn off all of the things in your camera that alter the picture. Sharpening, saturation, dynamic lighting, High ISO noise reduction etc. This means the preview JPEG that goes in the RAW/NEF file are closer to what the sensor data is and that is going to be closer to what LR generates. If you're shooting RAW, none of that stuff matters anyway. To me I like this because then my preview on the back of the camera is closer to what I'm going to start with in LR.
You can also select the "Standard" option in the render preview pull-down while importing the images. It adds time to your import because it generates the previews from the RAW/NEF file during import. But you gain that time back by not having to generate previews as you view them.

When importing images into the lightroom you can have lightroom automatically apply a preset that makes your images look more natural. Then you can fine-tune your images from that preset point.
I created my own preset that applies the initial corrections that I like. So, my CR2 images look pretty decent even before I start to do what ever fine tuning I think they need.

I don't print out of lightroom, but I do use a CWB in camera and build a camera calibration profile for every shoot. It ensures my clients get the most accurate reproduction I can provide as a starting point.
I let the printer manage colors. This results in images that work no matter how dim or bright my monitor is (even though it is calibrated). Pay attention to your histogram before printing. It it doesn't look right for the image you are about to print, don't print. Figure out why it is off.

I picked up a Passport Color Checker but have not given it a good break-in yet. My camera is set for Standard Mode - RAW. I am using the Epson ICC profiles and Spyder2 Pro for monitor calibration. The histogram looks perfect before printing but I get a consistant need to bump the brightness by 20 when I print in Lightroom.
Paul, what settings are you standardizing with a custom profile?

Jennifer,
Have you looked at the Developing Panel after intital Import and Rendering? You may see several default adjustments applied by ACR during import. Sometimes these are OK. Sometimes not. Building your own Import Preset to apply instead of the ACR defaults may cure some/all of your problems.
Good Luck!
