Noise reduction - 11-22-2010, 10:33 AM

What noise reduction software do you use?
I am in need and have never tried noise reduction of any sort.
Right now I am limited to Gimp for post processing.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Kelly

I use Noise Ninja, but there are other programs that are very good as well. CS5 is enhanced, but I haven't experimented with this by itself. Topaz DeNoise should be good as well as NIKs Define.

Here is an article on some comparisons. Noise Reduction: Topaz DeNoise vs Nik Dfine vs Lightroom Beta 3.2 |

Do you use any workflow software? I use Lightroom 3 and it has some pretty advanced noise reduction processing built in (at least for what I need). I believe Apple's Aperture has some noise reduction features as well.

Problem is, I don't have a 'workflow program' at all. I do not have ANY processing software at this time. I am hoping that after Christmas I will be able to get Lightroom 3 That will be my first processing program. Right now I am having to use Free downloads such as Gimp.

Are most of these NR downloads add-on's in which I need to already have a program to run it with?

Sorry for such a basic question, but this is all new to me.

Thanks for the help.

I use Noiseware. They have a stand alone as well as a photoshop plug in. They also have a "community" edition of the stand alone that is free, but you aren't allowed to run batches.

I use the stuff that comes with digiKam - and it is a workflow program and also allows batching stuff.

digiKam (with a K - it is a KDE based app). I know it is in beta on the windows platform. Another option is GIMP and some additional plugins. Both of these choices are free, but digiKam is an easier choice (requires less scripting, etc.)

i used to use paint.net(<--wiki)

and this Free Plugin for it

paint.net is a great open source tool that is free to anyone who wants it. there are TONS of plugins that are available. it is slowly becoming a very powerful tool. i acnt compare it to PS but being free it cant be beat

Thanks so much for the responses.
I do intend to purchase lightroom, but I first must get a new computer for it. Which is coming at Christmas :)
What I have right now only has 2gb ram, and is pretty old. Don't know if it would be sufficient to run the program without problems.

I have gimp on it right now, and it occasionally locks up and I lose what I was working on. I look into these

Thanks again for all the advice.

Kelly
