Tagging this. I am about to split my LR catalogs because they are a bit overwhelming. Going to have separate catalogs for weddings/sports/portraits.

Splitting and merging catalogs are helpful. When I need to do a search, I would do a 'one-off' catalog merging a number of catalogs and then utilize keywords. Or when a catalog has gotten too big, I would split it based on keywords.

I was just curious. How big is your Lightroom catalog that you consider to large? All of my photos, about 40,000, are in one catalog and I haven't noticed any problems with performance or being able to find an old shot.
