Question Lightroom workflow - moving files to another drive - 12-17-2010, 09:10 PM

I have been using Lightroom for a little over a year now (mostly for pictures of our first kid!). I am slowly running out of space on my laptop's hard drive, but that is only part of my issue. I would like to start taking some of the DNG's that I've added and moving them to my Windows Home Server. I would like to still be able to access the files when needed, so I obivously don't want them removed from the library, just moved. I would also like to get this set up so that I can use Lightroom on any of my computers, which means when I am ready for this all of my photos will migrate over to the WHS. I think I understand how I can sync the lightroom catalogs between my computers (likely using Windows Live Mesh), but I don't know how well Lightroom will work over a wireless connection. sorry my thoughts are sort of scattered, I will try to summarize.

Things I want to do:
1) Archive DNG's to another computer (I guess just as simple as moving them to my network shared folder?)
2) Use lightroom from multiple computers
3) Work with DNG's over wireless network

Anyone curretnly doing anything similar?

Thanks,

Justin

I'm pretty sure this is covered in all the links Sonny put together for us but it's pretty simple. Go ahead and move or copy your files to your server using Windows not Lightroom. Then open Lightroom, right click the folder & choose "Update Folder Location".

I'll let someone else answer your #2 question since I haven't done this myself, but I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of pointing to where your catalog is. Using your Lightroom catalog from a wireless server might slow things down though.

thanks Dan. I had looked at the post sonny made, but I guess I was hoping some people here were actually doing it. I have decided to only move some files over to my server, and keep the more recent ones on my laptop. I will still have the ability to use another computer to at least access everything on the server, and I won't be slowed down while making edits to new pictures by a wireless connection. I actually ended up using Lightroom to move the files instead of windows explorer. I started the move on a hundred GB or so before I went to bed, and it was all good when I woke up (even copying over wireless!).

Prepare for SLOOOOOOOOOWWWWWnes. You really have to have the files you are editing on the drive you are working on.
