wow I have used snapshots, but did not know about the smart object thing in photoshop. I have stopped using photoshop for many things because I did not like having to create an extra file in Lightroom, but now I see I can just create a psd and use a smart object. Too bad the DNG is not updated automatically like the raw files, though.

I use virtual copies to make bracketed exposures from scan files then stack & blend in Enfuse. Enfuse doesn't do a good job of blending multiple scan files from different negatives. Problem solved with virtual copies. No need to bracket in the camera. Saves film. Works for RAW files too when I realize after the fact that I should have made bracketed exposures.
