Dave Hill Effect?? - 01-14-2011, 03:32 PM

I really like the effect Dave Hill gets in his photos. Does anybody here do this? Or does anybody know how and can give me a write up, step by step, maybe? It doesn't have to be Dave Hill exact, but close to it. I'd love to see how some of my stuff looks like that.

Thanks for the help!

It's a combination of numerous large, soft light sources and usually his ring flash for fill, with extensive PP (dodge, burn, filters, etc).
A very VERY basic example of a similar technique is my shot here.
watch his BTS videos, they explain a lot as far as his lighting goes

search on youtube. then a google search. lots of people think they know how to do it in photoshop, some come close, but no one really nails it down completely.

personally, I'm pretty sure there's no easy button for it, it's a lot of hand brushing in PS... over and over for hours. starting off with a 360 degree lit photo is crucial though.

I have a Lightroom preset someone made that is supposed to mimic it somewhat.
I'll post samples and the preset info (if I can find it) or a link to the preset if I can find that again.

Dale, amazing. Exactly what I was thinking...... You wouldn't have a "How-to" guide would you? I am a horribly impatient person and a equally terrible resercher, I don't have the patiences to do the research.

Although I may just have to.

LOL Carly!! I started out with this photo:

About three hours and 30 layers later I got this:

I use Topaz adjust, Nik filters, Nik Sharpener, tons of burning and dodging. It's hard to explain how to do it. I just keep playing with the photo until I get it right. I've studied Dave's work for a long time. I love the moddy look and have based most of my work like that. If you look at my Flickr you'll see Flickr: dmarty78's Photostream

Carly,
Also, there is a photographer/graphic artist from Germany, Calvin Holloywood. He does have some tutorials on his site and you tube.

Here is some of his work:

I have used his tutorials and they are very simple, ( If you can get past the German accent)

Also I use this effect on 90% of my automotive photography: (sorry couldn't get the video to embed)

YouTube - Photoshop Spotlight.flv

If you want to see more of his work and some of his other tutorials, here is a link to his tutorials, his portfolio, and blog. Calvin Hollywood Photography-
